The Northern Ireland Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers was originally formed in 1949 as the 'Northern Ireland Cricket Umpires Association'. It was formed by umpires with the purpose of improving the standard of umpiring within the NCU (Northern Cricket Union). This was to be done through training and discussion of umpiring matters.

At the Association's AGM in October 1998 the name was changed to include scorers who, with the umpires, form the essential team to control and record the game of cricket. This reflects developments in England. In fact, the Association is affiliated to the Ireland Region of the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers - an organisation which operates world-wide and has its headquarters in Surrey.

Meetings are held throughout the winter to debate Cricket Law, to clarify areas of interpretation and to establish and maintain high standards of umpiring and scoring. These meetings are held at Shaw's Bridge Sports Complex, Belfast on the second Monday of each month, at 7.45pm, October to April. During this off-season period the Association also publishes a monthly newsletter called 'The Follow On', which is sent to all members.

The Association very much welcomes anyone interested in either umpiring or scoring to join the Association - you do not have to be a qualified umpire or scorer to become a member. Currently overall membership exceeds 100 people, with more new members coming along each month. Meetings are relaxed and informal occasions but provide an excellent forum for informative discussion. If you would like to become a member, it only costs one match fee for practising umpires and £10 for others per year - send us an email with your name and address and we'll send you an application form.
