I have been placed in a decision making capacity all of my adult life. This becomes critical on board a nuclear submarine where everybody's life may depend on one's ability to make the right decision quickly.

While I had my own business, my ability to make good decisions directly represented how successful we would be. We always met the payroll, and we paid our bills on time. Twenty years later, the company is still on sound footing and continues to grow.

Our government should be run as though it were a business, with legislators gathering the facts necessary to make the right decisions and being responsible for financial matters that are placed before them. For me, this is business as usual... for some, it's a new concept.

As an Assemblyman for this district, my aim is to to:

Reduce Government bureaucracies that squander our tax money...
Eliminate out-dated and ill-conceived give-away programs...
Eliminate secretive back-room deals...
Help our children learn with proven and effective programs that work...
Reduce taxes that impede personal progress and business growth...
Use proven techniques that work, and eliminate those that don't work...
Put a stop to government interference with private and personal business...

Libertarians believe in protecting the rights of the individual. You should be left to do as you desire, so long as one does not forcibly interfere with the rights of others. Personal responsibility must go hand in hand with liberty. People who wish to violate the rights of others should be held accountable for their actions. People should preserve the right to make decisions for themselves.

The war on drugs has been a failure. The decriminalization of drugs, much like alcoholic beverages, would remove the criminal element surrounding drugs. We learned many years ago that prohibition doesn't work. It creates crime. Remove the criminal element and the profit motive, and there will be no drug problem as we know it.

There is no doubt that guns can kill. So can automobiles, and pesticides, and many other things. This doesn't mean that our government has the right to prevent citizens from owning personal protection. I understand the arguments against firearms, but law abiding, responsible citizens must be able to defend their lives and property against all perils, including those who desire not to follow the law.

Our government has gotten so used to the idea of taxing us, that it seems routine at every turn. There's telephone tax, airport taxes, gasoline taxes, cigarette taxes, property taxes, liquor tax, Sales tax,  Federal income taxes, State income taxes and on and on and on. Prop. 13 was a good idea, but it didn't go far enough.  It's time to trim the fat-cat programs that create positions for cronies and good-old-boy networks. The government is no longer part of the solution, it has become part of the problem.

I love my country, the State of California, and the East Bay. It's a great place to live. While our government isn't perfect, it's not too bad... but it could be so much better. I would just like an opportunity to help make it that way.
