I found this recipe on the What's
for Dinner message board on AOL. It was posted by Bizzimom and it's our favorite
Christmas morning breakfast. I love the fact that I can prepare it the night before
and not fuss in the morning. I often make it with browned and drained breakfast
sausage instead of ham.
Boston Common Brunch
8 slices day old bread (or enough to cover the
bottom of the pan)
2 cups sliced mushrooms
1 small onion -- chopped
4 tablespoons butter
2 cups diced ham
4 cups grated cheddar or Swiss cheese
2 Tablespoons flour
2 teaspoons dry mustard
8 eggs
3 cups milk
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
Remove crust and cube bread into bite sized pieces.
Spread in bottom of greased 9x13 pan. Sauté mushrooms and onion in butter. Spoon over
bread. Arrange ham on top. Combine cheese, flour, and mustard; sprinkle over ham. Beat
eggs, milk salt and nutmeg. Pour over everything. Tightly cover pan with foil; refrigerate
overnight. Bake uncovered in center of preheated oven (at 350°) for 50-55 minutes or
until set.
