THE   Deep Purple DIARY

Recommended Listening

Here is a chronological listing of the currently [and soon-to-be] available UK CD and video releases that you would need in order to accumulate a fairly complete collection of all of Deep Purple's officially released recordings. It is not, therefore, intended to represent a definitive discography and excludes the original versions of releases where upgraded re-issues have tended to make those earlier releases redundant.

* Note: The Japanese versions of these releases include bonus tracks.

The trio of Polydor albums from the 1980's - "Perfect Strangers", "The House Of Blue Light" and "Nobody's Perfect" - were re-issued in digitally remastered form in 1999. However, "House Of Blue Light" was remastered from the masters for the LP which meant that over 4 minutes previously only available on the original CD was missed.

One deleted item has been included for completeness, "Doing Their Thing", which begs the release of a compilation video rounding up all of the band's surviving TV appearances over the years.

In addition, the following compilations are worth investigating:

Singles A's & B's [revamped 1993 edition] The Compact Disc Anthology

[*] Singles A's And B's EMI CDP 7 81009 2 [deleted]
[*] The CD Anthology EMI CDS 7 96129 2 [deleted]

Rhino/Warner Bros R2 75566

deep purple 30 : very best of Shades 1968-1998

Conspicuous by their absence from this selection will be the glut of over fifty or more "Best Of" and "Greatest Hits" packages released over the years which, whilst of interest to both the casual buyer or the completist Deep Purple collector, add nothing to the recorded legacy as shown above and the details of which would be more appropriate in a discography.

Also absent from the list is the "Last Concert In Japan" album recorded on 15th December, 1975 [released by Warners in Japan], as this is considered to be the weakest ever Purple release, a fact agreed to at the time when EMI in the UK issued a catalogue number but withheld release [though it was released elsewhere in Europe and Australia]. A new, revamped release of this performance is being worked on at the moment, called "This Time Around".
