Archives Of Urdu Poetry MIRZA MOHAMMED RAFI SODA Soda belongs to the earliest generation of Urdu poets whose contribution cannot be measured in terms of quality or quantity. Its importance can only be appreciated if one realizes the fact that in those days the Urdu language itself was in its infancy. For all practical purposes, Farsi was the language of the elite and the educated. Urdu poetry had yet to find its niche. Poets like Quli Qutb Shah, Wali Deccani, Mir Taqi Mir, Mir Dard and Mirza Soda took it upon themselves to break the shakles and establish Urdu poetry as a rightful rival to its Persian counterpart in the subcontinent of that era. Soda's poetry appears unique in being boastful, witty and perky, almost out of tune with its period. You will rarely find the pathos and sadness that so characterize Mir Taqi Mir. The following few verses are part of the golden heritage of Urdu poetry.
