Who are we?

New Mexico Citizens for Clean Air & Water is an organization of voluntary citizens for environmental advocacy. We work in many arenas on issues to improve the quality of the air and water in New Mexico, the Southwest, and our Nation. It is our intent to be technically credible, to seek regulations and standards that are within the economic capability of the party being regulated, and to pursue enforcement ourselves only if the responsible governmental agencies fail to act. We do not seek to establish any particular moral philosophy. If there is an environmental offense, we try reasoned argument with the responsible party before seeking either governmental enforcement or legal action. Our usual objective is to stop pollution, not to punish the offender unless the offender demonstrates deliberate disregard for the environment. We work toward a society in which information is openly shared among industry, government, and citizens. We work to establish trust among these different camps, looking forward to a time when environmental protection, like highway safety, will occur more often through reasonable cooperation than through police action. When reasoned argument fails, we go to court.

What do we do?

We began in 1969, to clean up air emissions from large, coal-fired power plants in northwest New Mexico--first, the notorious Four Corners Power Plant. To this day, one of our top goals is protecting long-range visibility and the colorful vistas so treasured in the Southwest. With our efforts, New Mexico's skies are once again turquoise.
Our work includes:

Our expertise.

We have our niche and special strengths that distinguish us from other successful environmental advocates. We are proud of our expertise in technical fields, such as:

Our accomplishments.

Specific pollution sources for which we achieved cleanup include:

Our philosophy of environmental compliance.

Our response to corporate pollution depends, in part, on corporate attitude. We judge attitude by considerations such as:

Case histories.

We have written several short stories of particular cases on which we have worked, and we will occasionally add more stories as we get time to write. Click on a title for an action-packed adventure. (The stories of our history, the Four Corners Plant, and the Grand Canyon necessarily overlap because, in reality, there was no boundary separating clean air for New Mexico from clean air for the Grand Canyon.) ** indicates a title not yet active.

Newspaper columns.

For more than 25 years, we have maintained a regular newspaper column. Click here for some of our columns, listed by topic and date.

Membership and finances.

We conduct membership and fund drives only occasionally, because we sometimes receive donations and because we have often won reimbursement of our legal expenses from polluters when we have prevailed in court. Any member who wishes to participate actively is welcome to attend board meetings and to take an organizational, administrative, or technical task of his/her choosing. To join NMCCA&W and/or to send a donation, click here for a printable mailing form. Dues are $10 individual, $20 family, and $5 student. The form is handy, but you may simply write us at
