Cape Hatteras Vacation

At first glance, these might look like hills. These are actually earthworks, dug out by the Confederate Army in 1864 to protect Richmond. A whole series of earthworks appear in this area, part of Richmond National Battlefield Park.

These photos are from Fort Grisby, and feature a seven foot deep trench on the opposite side. During an 1864 battle, General Grant sent a unit of 120 black soldiers against this fort. Sadly, 3 returned; the rest killed, captured, or wounded.

One exit north of Williamsburg on I-64 is some of the best bar-b-que that this family has ever had. Pierce's Bar-b-que does have a large following, but is well worth the stop.

The pork is plentiful and the sauce tangy sweet and spicy. They also have chicken and ribs.

We go to Cape Hatteras to relax and enjoy the uncrowded beaches. This is the view from the beach house we rented in Avon, NC..

And these are several of the many "local residents" of this area
