Meet the Current Officers
President Neville Holders Mission Statement: I will bring to the Presidency, experiences from a number of activities covering over 15 years of membership in the NOBCChE and the DVC-NOBCChE:(1) was elected Vice-President in 1996 (2) assumed the Office of President in 1998 (3) served as Facilities Chair Person for the DVC/NJ Science Bowl for nine years and (4) presented proposals ,written and oral, to the Affirmative Action (Diversity Department, Diversity Council) Committees at SmithKline Beecham and Rhône - Poulenc Rorer Companies, these efforts encouraged these companies to participate in the local and national activities of NOBCChE. Since 1996, I have demonstrated my interpersonal, leadership and managerial skills by (1) selecting the sites and organizing and leading all of the quarterly and executive body meetings of the DVC-NOBCChE, (2) selecting the sites for the Annual Science Bowl Competitions, (3) initiating the establishment of collaborative efforts with the Barristers Association of Philadelphia and INROADS of Philadelphia and (4) expanding our Corporate and Institutional sponsorships. If elected, I will continue to (1) seek out collaborative efforts with other African American Professional Organizations, (2) expand our Corporate and Institutional sponsorships, (3) foster active participation of the local student Chapters and (4) explore fund raising events (e.g. Golf , Tennis, Bowling tournaments) which could annually put the DVC in a stronger financial position. With the additional human resources and sources of funding I will support efforts to expand our educational and professional programs. BIGRAPHICAL SKETCH - Neville Holder Education: BSc. and MS degrees with honors in Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of the West Indies in 1965 and 1968,respectively; Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Waterloo in 1973. Professional: Dr. Holder is a Research Fellow at Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Pharmaceutical R&D in Collegeville, PA. He started his Rhone-Poulenc Rorer career in 1992 as a Senior Research Scientist in the Process Chemistry Department . In 1968, Dr. Holder began his industrial professional career as a Research Chemist with Gillette Research Institute in Rockville, MD and was promoted in 1973 to the rank of Senior Research Chemist. In 1978, he joined the SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceutical R&D in King of Prussia, PA as an Associate Senior Investigator. In 1992 he moved to Rhone-Poulenc Rorer. Activities/Memberships: Dr. Neville L. Holder has been President of the Greater Delaware Valley Chapter since 1998 and a member of NOBCChE since 1987. Previously he was Vice-President (1996-1998) and served as the Science Bowl Facilities Chairperson and a member of the Scholarship and Educational Committees. He is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, and the Philadelphia Organic Chemists Club.
Iris R. Wagstaff volunteered to serve as VP of DVC-NOBCChE in 1998 when Neville assumed the presidency. Since that time she has demonstrated the leadership qualities essential in promoting growth in our chapter. As co-coordinator of our Super Science Academy with Walter Phillips, Iris helped that program grow substantially for the last two years. She brings to the office of Vice President a strong commitment to our organization, a mastery of organizational and people skills, and the ability to successfully represent our chapter. BIGRAPHICAL SKETCH Iris R. Wagstaff Education: University of North Carolina at Greensboro, B.S. degree in Chemistry and minor in African American Studies (May, 1993); North Carolina A&T State University, M.S. in Analytical Chemistry (May, 1997); Graduate Intern in Analytical Research at Rohm and Haas Company in the Minority Graduate Program (May, 1995- May, 1996). Thesis Work "Characterization and Stereochemical Analysis of a Series of Beta Keto-Esters by 2D NMR". Professional: Analytical Chemist at Rohm and Haas Co., Spring House, PA (March, 1997 - current). Research scientist in the Multicomponent Analysis Group of Analytical Research. Research areas are FTIR spectroscopy and pyrolysis GC-MS. Activities: Worked with the Greensboro Area Math and Science Education Center (GAMSEC) to prepare seminars and workshops to train K-12 teachers in Science and Math. (5/94-5/95); Science teacher for Saturday Academy Enrichment Program at NC A&T State Univ. (5/94- 5/95); Tutored Math and Science for the last 8 years; Member of the Metro Atlanta chapter of NOBCChE. (5/93 - 5/94); Currently, a coordinator for the Saturday Super Science Program of the DVC of NOBCChE. Membership: ACS, NOBCChE, and AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science. Nomination of H. Patricia White for the office of secretary for the DVC-NOBCChE. She is currently in the Formulation Chemicals business unit of Rohm and Haas in Spring House. She has been an active member since 1994. She has served as a tutor in the Trajectories program and also volunteered on the registration staff for the science bowl. Her enthusiasm and outgoing personality are contagious! Also, her willingness to volunteer, and organizational skills make her a viable candidate for the office of secretary. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH H. Patricia White Education: Graduate of Pennsylvania State University in 1991 with a BS in the Life Sciences Professional: Technical Assistant in Formulation Chemicals at Rohm and Haas Company in Spring House, PA for the last 6 years. Activities: DVC-NOBCChE member since 1994; Tutor for DVC-NOBCChE Trajectories program since 1994; Volunteer with DVC-NOBCChE Science Bowl registration staff since 1997 Mark Jackson is a manager in the Financial Division of the Rohm and Haas Company. He has also served as treasurer for the Rohm and Haas Credit Union. Most recently, Mark volunteered to work with our current interim treasurer to evaluate our financial records and help us prepare a annual statement. As a CPA Mark's expertise will be invaluable to the chapter as we explore new fundraising opportunities. Having a CPA as our treasurer offers us a definite advantage as we prepare funding proposals for submission to foundations and corporations. Marks knowledge of and commitment to strong accepted accounting principles and practices serve us well. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Mark A. Jackson Mark A Jackson, CPA, is the Consolidations Analyst for Rohm and Haas Company the second largest specialty chemical company in the world. Mark is a 1991 graduate of Widener University where he earned his under graduate degree in accounting. He is licensed to practice in the state of Maryland and holds a Delaware certificate. Mr. Jackson has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Rohm and Haas Employee Federal Credit Union, a 20 million dollar financial institution. Marks knowledge of General Accepted Accounting Principles and his knowledge of non-profit accounting will be invaluable to the organization. |
