DVC-NOBCChE's Super Science Saturday Academy

The Super Science Saturday Academy is a group of interactive learning programs designed to foster not only enhanced aptitude in the sciences... but a lifelong curiosity and love for learning and cre-ative experimentation. Approximately 120 students in sixth through eighth grades-along with their parents-participate in the program.

The first element is the Super Science Saturday Project, where students partici-pate in investigative, hands-on science projects and demonstrations. In the spirit of SSSA motto of living and learning, the students are exposed to various scientif-ic disciplines, which have ranged from aviation to chemistry' to photography.

Phase two, "Project Science and \lore" involves seventh and eighth-grade students in four long-term chemistry' and/or engineering projects. Aiming to develop the well-rounded scientist of the 21st century, the program teaches partici-pants to:

  • Perform mathematical analysis
  • Collect and manipulate data
  • Document findings clearly and consistently
  • I)raw conclusions based on scientific method
  • Develop oral presentation skills
  • Work effectively in groups


The program is funded by the National Science Foundation; Comprehensive Regional Center for Minorities (CRCM) in collaboration with St. Joseph; University.
