WHY: This event is
a Benefit for the facade restoration of THE NATIONAL ARTS CLUB
[established in 1898], which is headquartered in the former
Tilden Mansion built in the 1840s and reconfigured in 1881-84 by Calvert
Vaux [who designed Central Park with Frederick Law Olmsted]. The Tribune
reported in 1882 that the reason for the expansion was that "Samuel Tilden's
library was growing so rapidly that there had to be some place to hold it."
The newspaper estimated the cost at $200,000. Sculptor
Samuel Kitson worked on some of the sumptuous residential interiors, and
also embellished the 59-foot frontage with themes from Tilden's prodigious
library. A bust of Da Vinci is perched above a front door, and a memorable
panel with five heads modeled in brownstone that "represents the literary
idea which is the foundation of the whole new structure" offers the visages
of Dante, Shakespeare, Milton, Goethe, and Benjamin Franklin facing the tranquil
green trees of Gramercy Park. Vaux had extensive carving carried out
over the entire front. The dark granite has repeated leaf patterns
and, occasionally, the monogram "T." The brownstone and red Carlisle
stone from Scotland have inventive and unusual carvings, especially at the
facade's corners, where foliate ornament gradually spreads out into a plain
field of hammered masonry.
What happened to Samuel Tilden's books?
In 1886 Tilden died and left the bulk of his $5 million estate to begin a
public library for New York. In the 1890s the famous Tilden collection
was combined with the Astor and Lenox Libraries for what was built as the
New York Public Library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd
Street. Perhaps you have enjoyed the benefits of Tilden's generosity
on behalf of literacy and a public good.
What's happening to Samuel Tilden's residence?
Preliminary tests indicate the granite and brownstone are not in alarming
shape yet, but the red Scottish sandstone blocks are disintegrating
and "failing over a wide area," stated a 1997 architect's report. Since
the original quarry is still open, the sandstone portions can be replaced
with matching blocks. All it takes is an ample restoration fund.
Attend the fundraiser and enjoy yourself in the name of landmark
preservation.

National Arts Club. Thank you.
