"From this century," Andre Malraux once remarked, "in France, three names
will remain: De Gaulle, Picasso, and Chanel." Coco Chanel introduced the
comfortable cardigan sweater, affordable faux pearls, shoulder bags, and
many other fashion innovations. Chanel was, quite simply, the most influential
designer of the 20th century. Come learn about the woman whom Salvador Dali
once called "the best-dressed body and soul in the world."
The author Janet Wallach is the author of the biography Desert Queen:
The Extraordinalry Life of Gertrude Bell. She has also written two books
on fashion.

Greta Garbo, upon meeting Isaiah Berlin reportedly said "You have beautiful
black eyes." Isaiah Berlin, the Oxford philosopher and champion of liberal
democracy, led a fascinating life working British Information Service in
New York City , as a diplomat in Washington, D.C. before becoming a legendary
scholar and teacher at Oxford. His work "The Hedgehog and the Fox" (comparing
Tolstoy's and Dostoevsky's views of history) brought him world-wide fame.
Berlin was a Fellow of All Souls, President of Wolfson College (Oxford) and
President of the British Academy.
Michael Ignatieff worked a decade with Berlin on this authorized biography.
Ignatieff is the author of The Warrior's Honor (on ethnic war) and The Needs
of Strangers (a study of altruism), and a novel Scar Tissue, which was
short-listed for the Booker Prize. He is a frequent contributor to The New
York Review of Books , The New Yorker and The New Republic. He resides in

Bentley on Brecht
Rarely in the history of the theatre, or even of literature, perhaps,
has one writer had the influence over the destiny and historical and critical
perception of another.
Eric Bentley has been Bertolt Brecht's other, off-stage voice almost since
the two met at UCLA in 1942. Bentley (BA 1938, Oxford, PhD 1941, Yale) has
helped shape Brecht's literary fate both in the U.S. and abroad. Bentley
has been the Charles Eliot Norton Professor at Harvard, as well as drama
critic at The New Republic, and holds an honorary doctorate from the New
School for Social Research. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts
and Letters and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In addition to his
many books, such as The Pirandello Commentaries (1985), The Kleist Variations
(1982), and The Brecht Memoir (1986), The Florida Theatre Festival is named
in his honor.
Book-signing of Bentley on Brecht (Applause Books, 1998) after the program.
