There's a system in Manhattan for figuring out
the arithmetic of our avenues. Here it is. Always
drop the last figure, divide by
2, then add or subtract
-- as indicated below. The answer you get is the nearest
numbered cross street. In Manhattan, Fifth Avenue is the dividing
line between EAST or WEST streets north of Eighth Street; south of 8th Street,
Broadway is the borderline that separates streets like East Fourth from West
Fourth, positively.
