The festivities for River Run XXX began a week early with the Retro River Run. This was a commemorative 5K non-competitive event held in downtown Jacksonville. Many runners who participated in the first River Run in 1978 were on hand. How could we have guessed that 30 years later, we would be getting ready to run it once more as part of the group that has run it every year.
It was a warm day and we were feeling a little wiped out after the race.
Notice that the logo for the Retro Run is the same as the one for River Run #1.

A true celebrity was on hand for the Retro Run. Bill Rodgers, one of the all-time great American distance runners, was the winner of the first River Run. He won the Boston Marathon so many times, he became know as "Boston Billy." This is a photo that we will treasure long after we have run our last River Run, which in Norm's case is the one coming up on March 10th, 2007. |

A large contingent from the Amelia Island Runners was on hand for the Retro Run. A.I.R. President John McBrearty helped Norm run a steady pace. Norm claimed afterward that he had set a new PR for a 5K Retro Run. There was no timing or scoring for the event which meant that everyone could just enjoy running and not worry about beating any arch rivals. Ed Hardee had his mini-digital-camera and stopped on the Acosta Bridge to take this photo. |

After the run, John McBrearty made Bill Rodgers an honorary member of A.I.R. Then Ed Hardee got everyone together for a group photo. Frieda and Norm were wearing their special "River Run Streaker" shirts, Bill Rodgers hadn't received his A.I.R. t-shirt yet, and Frank Frazier was wearing some kind of a Strider shirt. Everyone is looking forward to the Real River Run next Saturday. |
