Sesfontein is situated in the north western part of Namibia, close to the Hoanib river, on the southern side of Kaokoveld. A gap in the mountains gives access to the valley basin on Sesfontein (six fountains) where lush green gardens give the andscape its special oasis charader. In 1896 the goverment of what was then German South-West Africa built the Fort of Sesfontein as a control point for keeping in check caftle disease arms smuggling and illegal hunting of big animals. The fort was abandoned in 1914 and only ruins and a small army-cemetery still stood witness to the former German presence in Sesfontein
Today, almost 100 years after the original establishment of the Sesfontein Station, the fort has acquired a second lease of life after being tastefully restored as a comfortable Iodge for tourists on individual holidays. The fort offers comfortable double- bed rooms and suites with bath\shower, bidet and toilet. All rooms are arranged around the centrat court which has been trans-formed into a unique oasis-garden by plantation of old paim tree stock.
Use of building
materials characteristic of the region, such as clay walls, stone floors
and reed linings convey a very special and original atmosphere The visitor
can also expect the most modern facilities, however, as the standard of the
bathrooms, supply of warm water from solar cells, mosquito net for the
four-poster bed, and the fitted ceiling fan can testify.
The former officers mess has been refurbished as a restaurant with integrated lounge and bar. The very spacious Swimming-pool offers the guest opportunity for refreshment and exercise.
Ihe place offers an extremely pleasant atmosphere with hot, dry days and cool nights. After the adventures of the day and the culinary delights of the evening, the guest will enjoy a relaxing night below the Southern Cross and a star-studded sky. Fort Sesfontein is an oasis in the Namibian wilderness.
Fort
Sesfontein is the gateway to Kaokoveld, an area of some 5O~OOO km2 between
Hoanib and Cunene, the frontier river to Angola. From the fort, a fascinating
area of Namibia can be explored. Untouched landscape structures, such as
sandy desert and bizarre rock forms, vegetation and wild animais - elephants,
giraffes, zebras, oryx antelopes, ostriches kudus, springboks and lions -
can be discovered in their natural habitat beyond the reaches of civilisation.

The Kaokoveld is home to the Himba a nomadic tribe with a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries They can be seen wandering with their herds of goats and cattle from watering hole to watering hole. Clad only with a loincloth the Himbas paint their body with an ochre-red pigment which protects them from the sun and makes a picturesque decoration.
The
wildest, most inaccessible and unusual of Africa's land-scapes can be expenenced
in single-day or longer trips from Sesfontein. The chief requirements are
knowledge of the region and a four-wheel-drive Jeep. For organised adventure
safaris Jeeps are available at the fort; guides can be hired by those who
would rather drive themselves.
