Armlocks from open guard

This weeks technique is a squeeze lock from the open guard - sometimes called the 'spider  guard'  This lock can be difficult to apply correctly against someone who knows it, so I will show an  additional armlock that can be used in sequence.  When applying these techniques, you want to  avoid leaving too much space in between you and your opponent - this is a general rule in grappling:  When Attacking - Close up the Space,  When Defending - Create Space.  We have left extra space  in demonstrating the techniques so that all the details can be seen.

Your opponent is in your open guard 1. Grab your opponents gi sleeve as shown, rotate your leg around the outside of his arm and hook your foot under his armpit.

NOTE: Be sure to grab your opponent's gi sleeve with your fingers on the outside - BJJ Sport rules prohibits grabbing the sleeves of the arms & legs with 4 fingers on the inside.

Hook behind his armpit with your foot.

2. Pull his arm in close to you - using your leg and arm. Be sure not to let his arm go!  At this point he may try to pass your other leg - this is O.K. - you will want your leg there anyway, so let him do it.

3. Once he has passed your leg, make a triangle(figure 4) with your legs, keep his arm in, and pull his shoulder down.  The act of pulling down on his shoulder should complete the squeeze lock on his arm.

IF HE DOESN'T TAP FROM THAT ... GO TO PLAN 'B'

4. Maintain your grip on the arm you were trying to lock. With your other arm, push his hips away so you have room to pivot on your back underneath him (we made some extra space here with the legs so you can see the movement) - I am spinning on my back so that my head will come out on his left side.

5. Spin around until you are side-by-side, then sit up to apply this shoulder lock as shown.  Be sure to keep some weight across his back so he can not roll out. To apply pressure, lean toward his head.
