| 'The Bladnoch Trot', which is run under British Harness
Racing Club rules, is held each year at Bladnoch Park, Wigtown, near Newton
Stewart. Hosted by Wigtown Agricultural Society and supported by many local
companies by way of sponsorship, the total prize money on offer amounted
to almost £2,000. Thankfully, the rain had stopped before the "off"
and a fair crowd had gathered to watch a total of eight individual races
being run.
Last year, the going was on the fast side with several track records being broken, including the Open Class Final, which was won by 'The Playboy' in 2 minutes 41 seconds. This year, however, after some heavy morning showers, the competition proved too much for the defending champion when he was beaten into 3rd place. The winner was the 10 year old bay mare 'Abitaboot', owned by J.Nicholson, who scooped £500 prize money along with the Ayrshire & Galloway Cup in a time of 2 minutes 42.8 seconds, beating 'Today I Say' by two lengths with 'The Playboy' a further length away in third. ©Susan King |
