This is the U.S.S. Federation, NCC-2100, a refit of the TOS Era dreadnought of the same name. Scott Einolf built his using the sadly long OOP SFSM Federation Dreadnought Conversion kit.

In His Own words:

Well after some on-again and off-again work, I finally finished painting the USS Federation Dreadnaught. This was my first attempt at using an airbrush (boy makes painting easier).

After priming the entire vessel, I started with the warp nacelles. I masked off outer parts of the nacelles leaving the interflux grids exposed. I shot them with Tamiya black. With small brushes, I used Tamiya copper on the front part of the nacelles along with Tamiya light blue. Once this was dry, I masked off these sections.

After this I took some tamiya light blue and did the engineering section. Next, I mixed some Tamiya gray with a few drops of Tamiya white and did a complete base coat of over the entire ship. After letting this dry for a day, I began the arduous task of masking (using painters tape) the entire secondary hull. I used a random pattern to create an Aztec effect. Once completely masked, I shot the entire model with Tamiya White. I set this section aside to tackle the primary hull.

Using Walker’s Aztec templates I did 2 sections at a time. Word of caution, always rinse off your templates off after each use. I found that leaving the paint on messed up my spraying because paint would get underneath the template. Had to wipe off and reshoot several grids. Once done, I was fairly pleased with the results.

I removed the masking from the rest of the vessel. The contrast was pretty distinct between the base and the white. At first I was OK with it, but decided that it was too much. More on that later.

I did some of the hand detail work as well. This was difficult for me because my hands shake pretty bad. Did the best I could. Hopefully it will improve with experience.
