A Corner of the Tapestry: A History of the Jewish Experience in
Arkansas, 1820s-1990s By Carolyn LeMaster.
-
I know this is not Christian History but it is worth listing. The author
of this work spent most of the past sixteen years researching and writing
this book. She traveled throughout the United States, and she visited practically
every Arkansas county. The story she tells is one of perseverance and religious
faith by a small minority in a Gentile world. This work chronicles the lives
and genealogy of not only the visible Jewish merchant families, but, more
importantly, the little known and often isolated families in such rural towns
as Mena and Morrilton. This book tells much about the saga of Jews
in Arkansas, but by extension it also sheds light on all Arkansans--for while
Jews might have only been a "corner of the tapestry," but they were integral
to the warp and woof of society. This is a very important book--and it was
worth the long gestation period! Item # AC83044 $48.00 Cloth

The Guiding Star For the St. Joseph Colony: A guide Book
for Catholic Emigrants to the Arkansas River Valley - 1880 By
Joseph Strub, Translated by Kenneth Barnes
-
130 pages, illus., 1997. The settlement of large numbers of German
and Swiss emigrants in and around Faulkner, Conway, Polk and Pulaski Counties
in Central Arkansas in the late 19th century is a part of established history.
However, the locating of this rare book by Dr. Kenneth Barnes in the
library of St. Meinrad Abbey and Seminary in Indiana brings to light why
and how this happened. The book contains the history of what was called
the St. Joseph Colony which stretched for 75 miles from north of Little Rock
to the Galla Creek railroad station in Pope Co., Arkansas. It followed
the north side of the Arkansas River and contained 200,000 acres of land
within the four counties. Included is a history of the Catholic churches
and schools in these areas, as well as description of the land, the climate,
flora and fauna. Explanation was given on how to purchase land in the
area and how to get to Arkansas from Germany. The book was a complete
guide to the emigrant. Item #GS91130 Paper $10.00
