Soap History

Gone are the days of tossing every meat scrap available into a cast iron pot set in the backyard, pouring in lye and hoping that it turns to soap! It's still fun to read about the old ways. In fact, soapmakers today should feel quite smug. Within a few minutes, modern soapmakers can toss a one-pound batch of soap into a blender, pour the soap into molds and know it's good soap.

How to become a 'Smug Modern Soapmaker'

Step 1. Buy 'Soap Recipes' by Elaine C. White.
Step 2. Follow Elaine's recipes and techniques.
Step 3. Read (but don't follow!) old soapmaking methods.

If you laugh at the old ways......
Congratulations!
You are 'Smug Modern Soapmaker!

Commercial Soap

The A & J Company consults with commercial soapmakers. (I'm talking large-scale here.) It is my experience that large commercial soap companies 'don't have a clue' when it comes to hand-crafted soap. Who knows? Maybe some day you will need the services of a commercial consultant. Dream big!

HAPPI Magazine This is a technical magazine for commercial producers of household and personal products.

An extensive history of Procter and Gamble and and article about Procter & Gamble soap with naptha are interesting reading.
