Al's Psychobilly Rants (Editorial and Opinion)

Hi, I'm Alan Leatherwood, the editor of this fanzine. I've written a number of articles for music fanzines and underground mags over the years, and I'll be reprinting some of them here. But primarily, I'm a rockabilly and folk musician, and I've been doing if for more years than I really want  to remember.
Al's CAREER BIO (The long Version)

And before we get to GONE RETRO, here's a blatant plug for my own new CD, which consists of mostly uptempo rockabilly music. If you haven't heard it yet, click on either the banner or on the album cover. Otherwise, just skip it and read on

Now,  let's get on with the fanzine.

GONE RETRO's credo and mission:

"Bop till They  drop!"

Hey, CATS and KITTENS!

Gators & gatorettes, guys and gals, plugs & wall sockets, nimrods and nimrettes, (You know who you are!)

Get on................... board.

The Mystery Train's Still Running

Rockabilly! Roots Rock, Tex-Mex, Folk, Psychobilly, Indie ROCK.

For starters, we've got some great interviews (Don Everly), as well as articles from the archives, poetry, lyrics pics. Check out our Elvis Tribute page. We will RANT and RALLY against that awful ROCK MUZAK that threatens to destroy what's left of our cultures on both sides of the oceans, which is, as usual, cheerfully brought to you by those same CONGLOMERATES and GOLIATH CORPORATIONS that own the hospitals where we're born, cemeteries where we're buried, shoe stores for our feet, the napalm factories, TIME/WARNERS, all the major periodicals, mags, comics, and newspapers; those great folks who have their hands in our pockets from the CRADLE TO THE GRAVE. We will reel and rail........ These BOZOS are RUNNING SHOW BUSINESS...

Of course, Elvis was the first connection to >>>>"everything<<<<<". And Sam Phillips of SUN RECORDS in Memphis was the connection to Elvis. He'd load up the trunk of his car with records, or have his brother JUDD do the same. Then they'd load up a couple of suitcases with the money they made by selling Elvis to RCA, and they'd be off to all the little radio stations to pay off the DJs to play this NEW MUSIC, "BLUE SWADE SHOES" by Carl Lee Perkins. (that's how Carl Perkins spelled "Suede" on his original draft of the song. I believe it may have been issued with that spelling on some of the first SUN 78 pressings of the song.)

As a kid growing up in the Fifties, I learned how to do the dirty boogie. I figured if I played my cards right, I would be dead by my late twenties.

No such luck. So here I am, still doin' the dirty boogie.

But nobody seems to notice it much anymore. Is it too tame?

Maybe we need to take the old dirty boogie GLOBAL.

We could get hit by a truck. So enjoy life. Because a vein could pop in our heads for no reason at all!

I've been thinkin' about all kinds of grizzly possibilities like that ever since Buddy Holly's plane went down in that winter storm in 1959. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was in the ninth grade, but I didn't bother going to school that week. I just sat home and played my records...........in the dark.
After awhile, rather than feel helpless about the future, I decided I would just stay goofy and nuts and. ......BOP!
for the rest of my life!
and for the last 45 years, that's exactly what I've done!!

I'm sure it's something Buddy would have wanted me to do. After all, This is the music that was heard round the world, the FIRST time, when it was new. When it was the REAL thing. Back when adults said it was EVIL. Back when even an INSTRUMENTAL by Link Wray was BANNED from many radio stations, because it caused people to RIOT! An instrumental, folks. Back when it was hard to make a living playing rock and roll music. Even singers like Buddy Holly had to play 4 shows in a single day, just to make ends meet.  Real rock and roll is still being heard today where ever people with a sense of a true sense of freedom and individuality still live. It's not heard much on the radio these days, because FREEDOM doesn't own the airwaves anymore, the CORPORATIONS do. But People who still think for themselves can find it in the neighborhood bars, clubs, and garages.

What is "CORPORATE" you may ask? Have you heard of  Madonna? She's corporate. Brittany, that's corporate. And of course, how about everyone's favorite corporate psycho, the chick that drove Kurt to suicide:

Man, if I had to come home to that skanky hog, I'd blow my head off too.Do you realize that this foul mouthed no talented pill poppin' moron probably makes more money in a single night for singing than most of us make in a year? Do you realize that she probably gets paid more money to act in a movie than we probably make in ten years?

So, the next time your brain washed pals say, "Hey Bunny Brain, let's go see a HOLE Concert, you just GOTTA tell 'em,

"No Man, I've GONE RETRO!"

ROCKABILLY MUSIC is the real stuff...

Tell 'em that you have relocated the BOP.
