THE VELVET UNDERGROUND AND NICO Verve/Polygram 823290-2, USA, 1986 On the first 1986 CD release, All Tomorrow's Parties is credited as "previously unreleased". When the master tapes of the album were dug out for CD remastering, they included an alternate version of the song (actually an alternate mix, also known as the "single voice" version, with one vocal track when she double-tracked her vocal on the original LP mix), which had only been given the thumbs in 1966 at the very last minute. Bill Levenson, the executive producer at Polygram responsible for all their Velvet Underground CD releases, decided to include this alternate version on the CD as a surprise bonus for fans. It became less of a surprise, though, when - contrary to his instructions - the CD actually labelled this version as "previously unreleased". Some German 1986 copies are mispressed: cover and music are really The Velvet Underground & Nico album, but the CD is labeled as "The Modern Jazz Quartet Plus" The 1996 reissues offer the original "double voice" version of All Tomorrow's Parties and have a nice booklet reproduction of the original cover with Emerson and inside gatefold photographs and credits (without the peelable banana however...). The USA edition has a yellow banana printed on disc while the German issue has a "silver & white" one. |

WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT Verve/MGM/Polygram 825 119-2, W. Germany, October 1988 Bill Levenson admits that it was impossible to leave the distortion on Sister Ray as it was on original recording. As a result, the sound is slightly compressed, but without impairing the immensity of the track's impact. Also on The Gift, the separation between the two tracks is complete, and the song can be heard exclusively as an instrumental, or as Cale reciting the story. The album version had always had a slight bleeding between the two channels. The 1996 reissues have insert with the skull tattoo (also reproduced on the disc) and offers two rare photographs from Suzan Cooper archives. |

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND Verve MGM Polygram 815 454-2, W. Germany, May 1986 When Bill Levenson prepared the tapes for the release on CD, he used the Valentin mix. However, when the tapes were sent to Germany, where Polygram were pressing the CD, a German engineer decided to re-examine the tapes and remaster the album using tapes in the German vaults. Rather than issue Lou Reed's 'closet' mix or the Valentin mix, he actually used one side of each on CD (with Lou's mix on side one), with the alternate take of Some Kinda Love. When Levenson heard the results, he was understandably upset, and so when Polygram subsequently re-pressed the CD in the States he redid the mastering so the correct Valentin mix was used on the entire album. The difference is the numbers around CD's center hole (01 is the first pressing, 02 is the second). The 1996 reissue offers a remastered Valentin mix (even though the Peel Slowly And See box set version use Reed's 'closet' mix). |

| Technical notes on 1969 Live CD reissues: there are audible crackles on some tracks as if they'd been taken from disc. When the tapes were originally purchased by Phonogram, some of the tracks were taken off acetates rather than tapes, notably Real Good Time Together, Beginning To See The Light, Over You, and Some Kinda Love. Levenson speculates that what probably happened was that "in 1969 they made recordings on two-tracks and then cut acetates, and those became the masters". It would appear that Polygram never had access to the so-called eight hours of tapes that Paul Nelson compiled the original 1969 Live from. However the acetates and tapes that Polygram were given for the CD did include some extra material. For some reason, this included two studio out-takes of Ride Into The Sun complete with vocals (which appear on various bootlegs). Also present were the two extra songs used on the CD releases, plus an acoustic Rock 'n' Roll entitled Rock 'n' Roll Movie (ed: I guess this is the version offered as bonus on Live At End Cole Ave bootleg CD), which apparently collapsed fairly quickly, and a live take of I'm Sticking With You (ed: maybe the version available on the scarce CDEP companion to the French 1990 Polydor box set). Both these tracks were considered unsuitable for release. When Levenson mastered the tapes, he decided not to compress the sound, believing that the hiss at the start of some tracks was a fair exchange for retaining what little clarity the tapes had at top end. | |
