St. Michael the Archangel

In the Apocalypse, we find the most dramatic reference to St. Michael. John recounts the great battle in Heaven, when the wicked angels under Lucifer revolt against God, and how Michael, leading the faithful angels, defeats the hosts of evil and drives them out. Because of this victory, St. Michael is revered in Catholic tradition and liturgy as the protector of the Church. His emblems are a banner, a sword, a dragon, and scales. The name Michael is a variation of Micah, meaning in Hebrew, "Who is like God?"

PRAYER:

St. Michael, the Archangel, Defend Us in Battle.

Be our protection in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do you, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Mother Teresa 1910-1997

It is God's work that has done it, not my work. I am like a pencil in His hand......the pencil has only to be used." Mother Teresa

Saint Padre Pio 1887-1968

Pope John Paul II declared Padre Pio a Saint on June 16, 2002

On September 20, 1918, Padre Pio was kneeling in front of a large crucifix when he received the visible marks of the crucifixion. The doctor who examined Padre Pio could not find any natural cause for the wounds. These wounds, which neither healed nor festered, were still bleeding at the time of his death in 1968, fifty years later. The wounds of the stigmata were not the only mystical phenomenon experienced by Padre Pio. He had many more gifts. He died on September 23, 1968 at the age of eighty-one. His funeral was attended by about 100,000 people.

Padre Pio was an exceptional man. He had a great love of Jesus. As a priest he heard confessions for hours. People came from all over the world to attend his Masses. One person who went to him for confession said Padre Pio told him every sin he committed and with whom.

After his confession he was converted....and believed. This person said, "I know I'm thick, but not that thick."

Padre Pio was known to, by God's design, be in two places at one time. He was in the monastery and at the same time giving the last sacraments to a wounded soldier on the battlefield.

Padre Pio touched the lives of thousands of people when he was alive....and thousands of people since he went to heaven.

Pope John Paul II

"WE WILL STAND UP AND PROCLAIM THAT NO ONE HAS THE AUTHORITY TO DESTROY UNBORN HUMAN LIFE"

The following are excerpts from a Letter of Pope John Paul II To All the World's Bishops ON COMBATTING ABORTION AND EUTHANASIA
May 19, 1991

The church feels called to this by her Lord. From Christ she receives the 'Gospel of life' and feels responsible for its proclamation to every creature. Even at the price of going against the trend, she must proclaim that Gospel courageously and fearlessly, in word and deed, to individuals, peoples and states. However serious and disturbing the phenomenon of the widespread destruction of so many human lives, either in the womb or in old age, no less serious and disturbing is the blunting of the moral sensitivity of people's consciences. Laws and civil ordinances not only reflect this confusion but they also contribute to it. When legislative bodies enact laws that authorize putting innocent people to death and states allow their resources and structures to be used for these crimes, individual consciences, often poorly formed, are all the more easily led into error. In order to break this vicious circle, it seems more urgent than ever that we should forcefully reaffirm our common teaching, based on sacred Scripture and tradition, with regard to the inviolability of innocent human life.

St. Joseph and the Child Jesus

St. Joseph, in all likelihood, was born in Bethlehem, and it is generally assumed that he died in Nazareth before Jesus began His ministry. The Bible tells us very little, of Joseph, but from the early chapters of Matthew and Luke we learn that he was a carpenter by trade, a just and pious man, and a most excellent husband and father. In accordance with the Jewish ritual, he was betrothed to the Virgin Mary, who was also of the race of David. Later, having learned that she was with child, though he had not been near her, he was privately considering putting her away. Yet he hesitated, for he was a kindly man, and he did not wish to expose the young woman to the reproach which such an action would bring. It was at this time of uncertainty that the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and revealed to him the Mystery of the Incarnation. 'Do not be afraid, Joseph, son of David,' said the angel, 'to take to thee Mary thy wife, for that which is begotten of her is of the Holy Spirit. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shall call his name, Jesus; for He shall save the people from their sins.' (Luke 1, 20-21).

In 1870, under Pope Piux IX, Joseph was proclaimed patron of the Universal Church. He is the patron of carpenters and a happy death.
