Olveston Parish Historical Society

The Parish of Olveston lies just off the A38 some 10 miles north west of Bristol on the old coach road from London to Aust Ferry, the main crossing point to Wales. It boasts several fine mediaeval buildings, not the least of which are St Mary's Church, The White Hart (the old coaching inn) and thirteenth century Olveston Court. The Parish has been inhabited since at least Iron Age times and ancient fortifications can be found nearby.

The society was formed in 1966 to "promote interest in the history of Olveston and the surrounding areas and to collect and preserve documentary and photographic records". The Society meets at the Methodist Hall on the first Wednesday of each month from October to April with guest speakers on topics as diverse as The Severn Channel during the Ice Age and Concorde. In the summer months we usually have two or three field trips (see picture to the left), often following up talks given during the previous winter. Visitors are always welcomed and, more often than not, recruited.

A selection of views of the parish can be seen by clicking here.  They are chosen from those created by local artist Neil Cairncross for our publication "Olveston Parish - A Brief History".  Click here for details of all our publications.
