Some memories offer a cooling respite from the heat of the present. Take
off your shoes, sit back and relax while I remember trivia from the early
50's through the early 60's when life was easy and we were young and oh so
innocent.
Milk was delivered to your door back then.

Friday families gathered in front of the TV to watch "I Remember Mama" and
on Sundays to watch "The Ted Mack Talent Hour" and "The Ed Sullivan
Show"
Schools
held Ice Cream Socials and ballet classes
Every student pledged allegence to the flag after morning
prayers were
said
Fire drills and hiding under our
coats in the hallways during air raid
drills
Ordering groceries over the phone and having them
delivered
Ramblers,
Corvairs, Studebakers and of course the
Edsel
Snow
forts, Skippy the ice cream man, baseball cards stuck to bike spokes with
clothes pins, clothes pin bags, Downtown
shopping, sock hops, corner drug store
sundaes and floats, real Christmas trees, real chocolate, clamdiggers, Redball
Jets and Keds sneakers, Chemistry sets, Lionel train sets, Tinker Toys, Erector
sets, Woodburning sets, poodle skirts, page boy hairdos, brush cuts, Mousetrap
shoes for boys, penny loafers with knee socks. Rollerskates with skate
keys....that I always
lost!

Love Lucy, Father Knows Best, Ozzie and Harriet, Fibber McGee and Molly,
Lassie and Jeff, The Life of Riley, Jim Bowie, Cochise, Wagon
Train, My Friend Flicka, The Lone Ranger, Fury,
Gunsmoke, The Mickey Mouse Club, The
Gail Storm Show, The Early Show, Firestone Theater, Alfred Hitchcock Hour,
The Twilight Zone, Hallmark Hall of Fame, Omnibus, The Kraft Hour and Christmas
shows galore All TV stations stopped programming after 11pm. Remember the
big round multi-colored target on the screen and that piercing sound
that signaled the end of all programs for the
day?
They were days of laughter, days
of trust and morals. Churches were filled with whole generations of families
and neighbors. Drug abuse and murders were far from becoming an everyday
happening. Children were safe. We were taught to love, trust and obey God
and to Honor thy Father and thy Mother....and we did. Remember? Can
you almost feel those days?
I can.
