Occaneechi's Struggle Continues in Hillsborough

The Occaneechi Village sits near the banks of Eno River in Hillsborough, NC.
This is a re-creation of the Occaneechi Village uncovered by archeologists at UNC in Hillsborough, North Carolina from 1983-1986.

The Occaneechi band of the Saponi Nation in Hillsborough began their crusade to be officially recognized by the North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs in 1990. Through the efforts of Chief John Blackfeather Jeffries and members of the Occaneechi tribe, their struggle seems to finally be over in 2001.

The interior of one of the huts can be seen here. There are stones stacked in the center and a bench that runs all the way around the inside of the hut about halfway up the wall.
