SEARCH FOR GIRL

A search effort was under way Friday in Uintah County where an 8-year-old girl disappeared Thursday afternoon in the Horseshoe Bend area of the Green River. The girl was reportedly playing with friends near the river when she disappeared, but it was unclear whether she fell into the water or walked away. Uintah County Sheriff Rick Hawkins is leading the search effort on both land and the river, and has enlisted the help of a team of specially trained search dogs. No description of the girl was available Friday night.

Rescuers find body of girl in Green River

VERNAL — Search and rescue workers have recovered the body of an 8-year-old girl, who had been missing since Thursday, from the Green River.

The girl, who would have turned 9 on Monday, was spotted by a search helicopter Sunday at 10:30 a.m. about four miles south of where she was last seen, according to a Uintah County Sheriff's Office news release.

The girl had been wading through the river with three other girls near the horseshoe bend area in Uintah County, about 10 miles southwest of Vernal, when she was pulled downstream by the current, according to the news release.

Rescue workers combed the river bottom, and four search dogs and several rescue personnel from numerous agencies also scoured the area. By late Thursday night more than 100 people were involved in the search, the news release stated.

Rescue workers and sheriff's deputies recovered the girl's body. The Uintah County Sheriff's office did not release the girl's identity Tuesday.
