NTSC SYSTEM USA

What are the different recording standards and where can they be played?

NTSC: NTSC is the most common video format in the United States and Canada. It is an acronym standing for the National Television Standards Committee, and it delivers 29.97 frames per second 525 line picture.

PAL: PAL is the video format used in Europe and parts of Asia. It is an acronym standing for Phase Alternation Line, and it delivers 25 frames per second 625 line picture.

SECAM: SECAM is a video format used primarily in France and Russia. It is an acronym standing for Système Électronique Couleur avec Memoire. 625 line picture.

ADDITIONAL  (PAL) NOTE: Quite a few  new BRITISH  PAL video recorders will play USA NTSC video tapes. This uses a system called Quasi-Pal that uses most modern TV's ability to show a NTSC 525 line picture, but then combines it with a quasi-pal signal for the color. This is a trick for playback only and you cannot copy an NTSC video to PAL with these machines, unless you have a more expensive digital conversion VCR. So, it pays to look in your handbook for NTSC Playback. If you can, then you can buy USA tapes from our NTSC pages and amazon will ship to Europe.

I am not aware of a similar trick on any USA VCR's to the it the other way round. This works on PAL TV's and PAL VCR's in Europe.
