Why oh why oh why?????????
For many years I have wanted to convert a bus to a motor home. Initially, my desire was to convert a motorcoach (MCI, Prevost, or GMC) but I realized that I needed to gain some experience first. Rather than invest a large sum of money (that I don't have!!) into a coach I decided to make my mistakes on my bus conversion #1 - a school bus. For me this has proven to be the best approach!!

Where did I get my bus?
This bus had just been taken out-of-service and had its last school bus inspection was in January '98. It is a 65-passenger, Thomas-built on a 1700 Series International chassis. It has a 6.9L desiel, 5-speed transmission with ~140,000 miles. I had it inspected the next week and it passed with flying colors.

May '98 - UPDATE
As you can see, the seats have been removed. Two rows have been repositioned for a large, double dinette area. In addition, you can see a counter and many RV appliances. I was very fortunate to get my hands on an old camp trailer and was able to gut it. This proved to be a very inexpensive source on some necesssary items. Some of the items required some maintenance or rebuilding but well worth the effort.

June '98 - UPDATE

June was a very productive month. I was on vacation for a few weeks (between jobs)and realized that I probably would not have this much free time for quite a while. My wife was working and my kids were in school --sooo I had no one to play with. I decided to jump in and paint OLD YELLER to keep myself out of trouble!!! You can't appreciate how big your bus is until you sand every square inch and tape every window and light.

A professional was hired to do the "gun" work. Stage One - Paint the roof (MACK TRUCK - white) Even at this stage the bus started to take on a new look - a better look!!!

Stage Two - Paint the body (MACK TRUCK - blue) - 2 days later then add pin stripping (red). We are quite pleased with the way it turned out. Of course, I made many mistakes along the way but learned alot from this first attempt. Should we change the name???

September '98 - UPDATE

Progress has been slowed due to a new job and a very long daily commute. Installed thus far have been:
COMFORT ITEMS
1) Queen size futon/sofa in the rear
2) Single twin futon over passenger-side wheel well
3) Two bucket seats purchased - one replaced original bus seat with swivel added
4) Carpeting - nothing fancy at this point
5) Three large bureaus to be installed under twin bed to expand in-bus storage
6) Kitchen counter installed with 3-burner stove with oven and double stainless steel sink
PLUMBING
1) 30-gallon fresh tank
2) 20- gallon gray water tank (mounted below the bus)
3) 12v water pump - not installed
4) 6.2 gallon propane gas hot water heater(not installed yet)
MECHANICAL
1) Purchase of a new oil pan 15 qt - installed
ELECTRICAL
1) 20-amp Converter (110v to 12v) - runs most on inner/outer lights, etc.
3) 15-amp distribution panel with ground fault circuit breaker - not installed
4) Portable electric furnace 5) Two deep-cycle 12 volt batteries run through converter for aux power

There is still alot of work to be done. BUT I have been working as a medical resident for the past two years between 80 - 100 hours per week with a daily 2-hour commute. I have NO time for "Bus Therapy". Given my storage situation and long work hours, I need to sell the bus -- as much as I hate to. I will admit that I am not much of a craftsman BUT there has been a lot of work done here. It represents a good start for someone and most importantly -- IT IS NOT YELLOW!!!!!
