Missouri State Guard Bibliography

MSG Bibliography

These are some of the better sources to use when researching the Missouri State Guard. I consider Sterling Price's Lieutenants to be one of the best. There are a couple of articles and journals that I haven't included yet. I hope to include them in the near future. If you are in a hurry drop me a line and I'll get the information for you.
  • Sterling Price's Lieutenants: Missouri State Guard, by Daleen, Lindberg, McGhee, and Peterson
This is probably the best study on the MSG to date. It is mainly a study into the organization of the guard, and includes a comprehensive list of officers of the Guard. The book also includes sections on the recruitment, arms, uniforms, and history of the Guard.
  • Service with the Missouri State Guard: The Memior of Brigadier General James Harding, edited by James E. McGhee. This is a very valuable addition to your bookshelf. Harding, the quartermaster-general of the MSG, provides a detailed look at the material condition of the State Guard. The text and notes by Mr. McGhee make it even more valuable.
  • The First Missouri Confederate Brigade, by Ephraim Anderson. This book contains a number of chapters on the Guard and Anderson's journey to join Price's army.
  • History of the First and Second Missouri Confederate Brigades, by R. S. Bevier.
  • The Forgotten Men: The Missouri State Guard, by Carolyn Bartels
This book lists over 3000 names, plus rank, company, regiment, and place of residence of MSG soldiers.
  • Missouri Brothers in Gray, edited by Banasik
This is a new book that chronicles the wartime experiences of MSG soldiers William and John Bull.
  • Diary of Captain J. J. Sitton  Online diary
  • The Fight for Missouri, by Snead
Snead was the Adjutant General of the MSG. His book covers the first year of the war.
  • Sterling Price and the Civil War in the West, by Castel
This is a pretty good book that covers Price throughout the war. Castel does a good job of incorporating numerous sources.
  • Sterling Price: Portrait of a Southerner, by Shalhope.
Another book that cover Price throughout the war. You can't understand the MSG without understanding Price.
  • Sterling Price: Lee of the West, by Ralph Rea
This book was written by the descendant of one of Price's soldiers.
  • The Civil War Reminiscences of General M. Jeff Thompson, Edited by Stanton, Berquist, and Bowers. Thompson was a MSG commander throughout the war.
  • With Porter in North Missouri, by Mudd
  • Bloody Hill: The Civil War Battle of Wilson's Creek, by Brooksher
  • Pea Ridge: Civil War Campaign in the West, by Shea and Hess
  • The Battle of Carthage: Border war in Southwest Missouri, by Hinze and Farnham
  • The Battle of Athens, by Dixon
  • Damned Yankee: The Life of General Nathaniel Lyon, by Phillips
  • Borderland Rebellion: A History of the Civil War on the Missouri Arkansas Border, by Elmo Ingenthron
  • Absalom Grimes: Confederate Mail Carrier, by Grimes.
This is a very entertaining book! Grimes joined the Missouri State Guard along with Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain).
  • A Southern Record, by Tunnard
Tunnard was a soldier in the 3rd Louisiana Infantry, which fought beside the MSG.
  • Confederate Military History, Volume 9
  • Compendium of the Confederate Armies, by Sifakis
