It's also a good time to visit a museum....Sweeny's in Republic, Mo is a great one. Here's their webpage: Sweeny's Museum
New Books:
| The Civil War on the Lower Kansas-Missouri Border by Larry Wood. I haven't had a chance to
take a look at this book yet, but it covers a subject that doesn't get much treatment. Sounds like it
ought to be good. From Hickory Press, trade paperback, 212 pages with end notes, appendix, $16.95. P.O. Box 1886-R Joplin, MO 64802-1886 | |
| Service with the Missouri State Guard: The Memoir of Brigadier General James Harding edited by James E. McGhee. Harding's memoir was first published in the Missouri Republican in 1885 and describes his service as the quartermaster general of the Missouri State Guard. It is a very interesting and valuable account and the notes by Mr. McGhee make it even more valuable. Don't miss it. | |

The book Wilson's Creek: the Second Battle of the Civil War and the
Men Who Fought It by William Garrett Piston and Richard W. Hatcher III is out. This is an excellent book
and is sure to become the definitive work on the battle. Go to the for sale page
to purchase a copy.
Another book that has just been released is Missouri's Confederate by Christopher Phillips. Missouri's Confederate tells the story of Claiborne Fox Jackson, the Confederate governor of Missouri. This is an excellent book so be sure and take a look at it. |

![]() | If you're going to be in the Kansas City area you should definitely make plans to visit the Steamboat Arabia Museum. This is undoubtedly one of the best museums I have ever visited. In 1856, the Arabia struck a snag as it was traveling west up the Missouri River loaded with supplies for western settlers. It took 222 tons of cargo to the bottom. In 1987, Bob Hawley, his sons David and Greg, Jerry Mackey and their families decided to locate and raise the Arabia. The result is one of the most magnificent displays of artifacts in existence. In my opinion, the most impressive aspects of the undertaking is that it has been done without government money or assistance. Private investors supported the undertaking. Visit the Steamboat Arabia webpage. |
