Towne Square 2000 is proud to welcome our very special guest, Kenny Loggins!
Moderator: Kenny Loggins has touched people's lives in a way few musicians ever do. His lyrics have the power to touch hearts, as his music lifts the spirit. His body of work as an artist and songwriter is among pop music's most distinguished and most successful. From the early days of Loggins and Messina to the recent Oscar nominated hit "For The First Time" which was featured in the film, "One Fine Day."
Kenny is once again breaking new ground with The Unimaginable Life, a musical "soundtrack" to the book of the same name which he's written with his wife, Julia. The Unimaginable Life is a celebration of the life and love Kenny and Julia share. Both the book and album courageously illustrate their concept of a conscious relationship, where each partner takes 100% responsibility for his/her own emotional reality, tells the whole truth to each other, and is completely committed to one anothers' emotional/spiritual growth.
Kenny and Julia were married in 1992. The couple live in Southern California with their 5 children: Crosby, Cody, Bella, Lukas and Hana.
Kenny, welcome to Towne Square!!!!
Kloggins: Hello again. It's good to be here. Are you planning to stay with us for a while?
Moderator: hahaha I sure hope so ... Let's begin with the obvious question, ... why the 'Unimaginable' Life?
Kloggins: The Unimaginable Life, I define as a life, relationship beyond the limits and definitions that our parents lived. For me, to experience a love that continues to be a palpable experience on a daily level is like defying gravity. That is what used to be "Unimaginable."
Moderator: In 'My Father's House' you sing: 'I wait for someone to save me just like you did all your life' ...So, it's not like THEY did it?... meaning....it's not the way that you learned growing up...what you thought love meant and relationships. That at that time what you've found now was 'Unimaginable'...yet you were looking for ...
Kloggins: "My Father's House" was a song I wrote for the album "Leap of Faith." It is essentially a dialogue with my father who had passed away a couple of year before that. What I meant by the line you quoted, was that I was wondering if someone would come into my life to give it more meaning. I had not yet fallen in love with Julia when I wrote that song.
Gigi says: Tell us how you met Julia.
Kloggins: I met Julia six years before we
fell in love. She was my health counselor at first, teaching me how to
fast and cleaning up my diet. Then, she became an emotional counselor (therapist)
who taught me the Fischer/Hoffman work. We fell in love about a month after
I had moved out from my first marriage.
Guest 1224 says: Was it love at first sight?
Kloggins: Not really.... I was attracted to
her, but I dismissed the idea.
Guest 1224 says: Help at first sight?
Kloggins: Yeah... Help me, I'm drowning:)
grenadine says: how long have you been with Julia?
Kloggins: 8 years now.
Debbie says: Kenny, will Julia be joining you on the next leg
of the tour?
Kloggins: Come this summer, Julia and I will
be traveling more together.
Moderator: Julia is a talented poet. Any plans to collaborate
lyrically, beyond The Unimaginable Life?
Kloggins: I think when the baby is a little
bit older and Julia starts getting more sleep, she'll be more open to collaborating
in the future. I love her poetry. I was just re-reading some of it today,
preparing for the Learning Annex Speaking engagement that we're doing on
February 14th in LA. She's really gifted and I'm trying to prod her into
writing more poetry.
Kloggins: Hopefully, in order to mix speaking engagements between the music ones.
NanC/Missy says: The power in her voice when she reads her words is incredible and adds an incredible depth to her words.
Kloggins: Yes. We're planning on having her read a couple of poems during the lecture. We're really excited about this. February 14th we consider to be our anniversary, primarily because it's the only date I can remember. We also think of it as the day we fell in love. I'm looking forward to taking everyone who comes to the show on a bit of a journey.
Moderator: Your music has always seemed to be a window, each song an expression of yourself at a time in your own life. Do you feel you speak through your music, or rather that your music speaks to you?
Kloggins: At this point in my career, it's finally flowing both directions at the same time.
Moderator: ooh nice
Kloggins: My music is an expression of who I am and who I am becoming. I see the message and the music merging and I imagine a time where the two can become one performance piece.
Gigi says: Does religion inspire your work? You sound so spiritual...
Kloggins: I wouldn't say that "Religion" inspires
my work as much as deep Spiritual conviction. My most tactile experience
of Spirit in my life started about a year or so before falling in love
with Julia.
Jesseª says: who are you trying to become through your music?
Kloggins: Toad the Wet Sprocket :)
Kloggins: No... actually I wrote a song a few
years back called "The Real Thing." The song caught me by surprise... so
much so that I put it away for an entire year. What I've learned over the
years is that my songs sometimes try to tell me things about myself that
I'm not yet consciously willing to face. In that way, my "Muse" tells me
what's really going on in my life. What my music, my art, my writing is
taking
me to is to be fully myself. ...not who I'd
like to be, but who I really am.
grenadine says: many people are inspired by many of your songs...
what inspires you?
Kloggins: Things that I feel... past, present.
Things that move me in my life... Last night I was dancing with my four
month old daughter and I got an idea for a song... I call it "A Lifetime
of Dancing." And I imagine it being a song or a book that covers 20 or
30 years of our lives together.
Devin<The Great One> says: your not gonna remake butterfly
kisses are you?
Kloggins: No, but I'm working on a remake
of "Lesbian Seagull" :)
Devin<The Great One> says: haha
Debbie says: Kenny, If you could write the ending to your life's
story, what would it look like?
Devin<The Great One> says: Where do you plan to be in ten
years?
Kloggins: Julia and I have a little place somewhere in Hawaii and we send the "G4" to pick up the grandchildren and bring them over... a few at a time.
Sara asks: Kenny, now that you are an experienced Dad with 5
children, what advice do you have for parents to be?
Kloggins: For starters, I highly recommend
a book called "How to talk to Kids so Kids will listen, and Listen so Kids
will talk" by Faber and Mazlish. I wish I would have found it a lot earlier
in my parenting career. It took me out of the role of "Cop" and liberated
me to enjoy my family a lot more.
NanC/Missy says: Hi Kenny, it's me Missy. I thought a long time about what question I'd ask you tonight. On your web site I have met several other young people who think your music expresses many important feelings. Have you ever thought about visiting schools and spreading your message about the environment to young people all over the country? I just know that kids would pay attention to you.
Kloggins: Thank you, Missy.
Kloggins: There may come a time to do that,
but right now Julia and I are so focused on the U.L. that time is really
the issue. I am thinking seriously about getting involved with the deregulation
of energy in California. I've been talking to a company called Green Mountain
that offers packages of renewable resource energy to homeowners. They would
like me to be their spokesperson. And they want to use "Conviction of the
Heart" as their theme.
Kloggins: It's an extremely important issue, one that could impact the way energy is made in the United States from here on... I see this as the biggest environmental movement of our time. If the citizens of CA choose Green Energy over doing nothing at all, it could send a message to the rest of the United States that we're willing to "take the energy back."
NanC/Missy says: I'd like to find more out about that Kenny.
Debbie says: As a citizen of California, I would too.
Kloggins: And even though it may cost a few more dollars a month, we want to make a difference.
NanC/Missy says: Well, when it's time you be sure to let me know. I think that that is a very important issue and I'm so glad your taking action!
Gigi says: Have you ever thought of running for political office?
Your beliefs could do much good.
Kloggins: I'm too faithful to my wife to run
for office. :)
"Devin"<The Great One> says: We would need everyone in the states to come together at one time to achieve the transformation to a newer form of energy, how can we wake everyone up?
Kloggins: California is about to find out a lot more about it, as energy is about to be deregulated in April, God willing.
NanC/Missy says: Good answer Kenny!
*?Valiant© says: How does Julia feel about you taking a
role as a spokesperson?
Kloggins: Julia supports whatever my heart
tells me to do Personally, I'm a little nervous about signing up with any
company, but this is too big an issue to just sit on the sidelines.
Moderator: Let's see some music questions.....
Anne-Marie says: Kenny.. I just wanted to thank you for your music and for how it has helped me through good times and bad this past year. The new CD is very inspirational. Would you like to be known as a musician, an author or a poet?
Kloggins: I'd like to be known as musician/author.
Guest 1232 says: Do you have a song that you find difficult to
sing and why?
Kloggins: The song "Forever" has a really
high note on the end. I missed it one night and ended up sitting on the
stage laughing along with the audience... It was actually a great moment.
I have friend who says "If nothing ever went wrong, we'd have no good stories
to tell.
Guest 1232 says: MY sister says that is her favorite song and is happy every time you sing it--Forever
*?Valiant© says: I think what guest 1232 meant, was 'emotionally' hard to sing...Do any of you songs reflect personal experiences?
Kloggins: Oh yeah... "The Real Thing" I've had a couple of moments where it was very difficult for me to sing it. One was when I did a show back east in a small theatre. In the front row was a man, his six year old daughter was sitting in his lap and they were both crying while I sang it. I got a sense that that song was very personal for them and it moved me so much I could barely sing it.
Kloggins: Another time was when my oldest boy Crosby was in the back of the hall. I could see him from the stage and he was weeping while I sang it. After the show, he told me that though he'd heard it a hundred times or more, that was the first time he'd really understood it. Those are the moments you live for as a writer.
Moderator: ...you're giving me chills...that is so beautiful ...
Kloggins: Another difficult song I've had to sing is called "This is It." I sang it at a rehab hospital where everyone in the audience was suffering from trauma. My head kept saying "What gives you the right to tell these people anything about crisis." But I kept on singing because I trust that song.
LauraH says: Hi Kenny! I play your songs at work (from LOF &
UL), and I am finding that Spirit will suddenly "kick" a song into my head.
Not that I didn't know the words, but that I could interpret them to deeper
areas. (Like realizing I needed to let go and allow Spirit to take me where
I'm meant to be in terms of work. I've realized I was "hiding" and needed
to "give the here & now what it's entitled to. I can't thank you enough
for the inspiration. Also, my kids love the Return to Pooh Corner album.
My 6 year old daughter enjoys watching the words appear
on the screen (via the CD from the book).
Kloggins: My sense is when a song or an album like Leap of Faith or the UL speaks directly to you... that's a message from your heart using my song as a vehicle. Pay close attention, because your interpretation is exactly what you need to hear.
NanC/Missy says: It's amazing - the hearing the song deep within
that you mention in the UL - it is a "real thing"!
Kloggins: What do you mean?
NanC/Missy says: When you mentioned that you would stop to take
a moment to listen to whatever song was in your mind -it is something that
I have become aware of in myself. It is a song speaking to me.
Kloggins: It's definitely that intuitive voice
within each of us that uses whatever it needs to get through.
*?Valiant© says: You keep mentioning you children, What
are their names and ages?
Moderator: Valiant....Kenny has 5 children: Crosby, Cody, Bella,
Lukas and Hana.
Kloggins: In my own life, I often notice one or two lines going over and over in my head until I take a second to see what they are trying to tell me. Sometimes it is just a song that I heard first thing in the morning that won't go away without a lobotomy.
As a friend of mine says, "The implant was successful... now leave me alone!"
"Devin"<The Great One> says: All your songs have deep emotions,
such as hope, and connecting with someone else as far as reaching their
heart, why so romantic?
Kloggins: I guess I've always been a hopeless
dreamer.
"Devin"<The Great One> says: as so are most of us on Palace,
hehe
NanC/Missy says: I have found the connection to be scary sometimes! And yup, sometimes that first song of the day can repeat on you! Fortunately, most of the time, one of those songs are yours :-)
Kloggins: I grew up in an era where writing
songs was about trying to get the listener to say "shit, I wish I'd thought
of that. That's exactly what I've been trying to say." I think a good song
is one that moves the listener.
sue says: You've succeeded! :-)
Kloggins: There's a great quote I heard a few years ago, "Music is at its best when the listener believes he is dreaming it."
NanC/Missy says: Good definition Kenny. Your songs certainly fit. Kenny, the most valuable possession I've taken away from the U.L. book is the ability to embrace life's uncertainties rather than fear them. Only thru doubts and questions do we find answers. Have you found these same levels of "openness" work to strengthen the family unit and how?
Kloggins: Yes. In my life I've learned that
the children feel everything that's going on between the mother and father,
and when mom and dad pretend things aren't happening, that really are happening,
the children begin to feel crazy. Then they start acting out in their anger.
Julia and I try to have what we call "Family Council" when something is
going on.
NanC/Missy says: Yes, I remember that from the book.
Kloggins: In council, we can be totally honest,
the children can react in whatever way they need to, and we can collectively
come up with solutions.
Moderator: Hi Folks...Kenny is checking with Julia to see if we can go a bit longer ... I apologize if we haven't gotten to all of your questions..... Oh good news!....we've got another 20 minutes or so .... thanks for staying with us Kenny :)
Entire Closed Circuit TV room says: WE
LOVE YOU, KENNY!!!
*?Valiant© says: ENTIRE TOWN HALL
ROOM, WE LOVE YOU MORE KENNY!
sue says: Why do you think it is so hard for people to be honest
with one another?
Kloggins: I think we're all afraid of losing
love, so we tend to present the "acceptable truth..." rarely the entire
truth. We need to learn that the love we're after is about being loved
for who we really are and how we really feel, not who we think they want.
The truth is, if they can't handle, whoever they are, all of who we are
I'd rather know that now and get on with my life.
Kloggins: "Safe" relationships are like being
in an emotional prison for me. I ain't goin' there!
LauraH says: You can say that again!
Moderator: "The road to love is lit by the lamps of fear" Kenny, is fear still a visitor in your lives now, or a passing stranger on your road...?
Kloggins: That's an interesting way to frame
fear. Fear is an occasional visitor, regretfully, but I trust it more than
I used to. For example, I leave tomorrow for some shows in Florida, and
I'm noticing how I emotionally pull away in preparation for the loneliness.
I even started fighting a sore throat today.
Moderator: :zinc lozenges...
Kloggins: But I find that when I cop to it
and tell Julia why I'm acting like a robot, the distance melts.
Moderator: That's a wonderful answer...thank you.
[Kickin©] says: I thought fear drives out trust? How does
one learn to trust fear?
Kloggins: Read the book!
AMK says: I'm Fearful we won't know what your next single is
Kloggins: What I've learned is that if I pay
attention to my fear it shows me where my roadblocks to love and intimacy
are. If I try to drive fear out of my brain it just runs me from the shadows.
Better to admit to it and look at what it's trying to tell me. That way,
I'm not run by it. That's what I mean by trusting fear. Is that clear?
Moderator: It's very clear to me....thank you, Kenny:)
[Kickin©] says: Perfectly clear thank you
sue says: Do you feel you need Julia to feel complete?
Kloggins: Good question. Absolutely. I know
I'm supposed to say "No, I'm cool on my own." And I can be... but I'd rather
not be.
sue says: Yes, that's what I was thinking.
Kloggins: I guess that's the paradox of loving someone. Julia's loving and supportive voice has become another voice in my head that I can turn to when the critical ones threaten to undermine my self confidence. Our lover should model self-esteem, not the other way around.
LauraH says: I know what you mean -- my husband had a very bad
case of pneumonia a few years ago & I felt like
I'd rather die than be without him. He has always been encouraging.
AMK asks: What do you say to those of us who are on are own--is
that such a bad thing?
Kloggins: No. That's a way better thing than
being in a lousy relationship. This is "rehearsal time" for you. An opportunity
for learning how to tell the truth to people in your life. That habit will
serve you well when love comes.
sue says: I think people have 'safe' relationships only because
they are scared of being alone.
Kloggins: Absolutely.
Moderator: How can we tell the difference between that overwhelming feeling of falling in love and BIG LOVE? It feels real, but is it?
Kloggins: It kinda doesn't matter. Big love shows itself in an extremely obvious way. There is no doubt about what your heart is feeling and it puts you through a thousand and one changes. Falling in love is worth following because it's your heart speaking to you.
AMK says: I feel you need to be happy with yourself before taking a leap with someone else.
Kloggins: This may or may not be the person you will spend the rest of your life with, but if you don't listen to your heart, you'll never find out. There are pop psychologist out there who consider falling in love untrustable. They say that it's the projection of the idealized, disowned "other." Julia and I say, "The heart is always to be trusted."
Arctic Frost says: Can we clone Kenny?!!
Kloggins: Why do you call yourself arctic
frost?
Arctic Frost says: I'm in Alaska, Kenny!
AMK says: I think your music helps us see what we would like to have in a relationship and hopefully that will happen for most of us.
Debbie says: But there is a difference between love, and lust,
right?
Kloggins: Yes. If you can't tell the difference,
I suggest you keep working on getting in touch with what you are really
feeling. I do know what you mean. I had a lot of trouble with that one
myself. But love is as real and as obvious as the screen you're staring
at.
[Kickin©] says: Love conquers fear, builds trust, drives
out fear ... I still wrestle with it
sue says: Don't people think too much and feel too little?
Kloggins: I think it's a disease of our time.
I suspect... no, I hope where we're heading as a society is a paradigm
switch from a head based society to a heart based one.
sue says: I hope so too. We make life too hard, I think
Kloggins: For example, the way things are right now, if we can make a product for a few pennies less, but it pollutes our rivers in the manufacturing process, we do it anyway because it makes good business sense. That's a head-based society. In a heart based society, such a decision would be as unthinkable as selling our children just becuase we could make a profit.
[Kickin©] says: Every action begins with a feeling, then
the thought, then the action. If everything was created by man, with the
"cradle to grave" concept, we would think more about things before we make
them.
Kloggins: amen
Kloggins: One more question...
"Devin"<The Great One> says: When you see down the road of
the future, does love guide you or do you guide love?
Kloggins: Love has always guided us, whether we know it or not.
*?Valiant© says: Kenny, before you have to leave....what inspirational advice could you give to teenagers, or adults who listen to your music?
Kloggins: Follow your heart. I used to think that was just some hippie saying... I didn't really get it at all. Now I've learned that my heart is totally trustable even though it may send me messages I don't understand at first.
NanC/Missy says: Kenny, Missy would like to wish you good luck on your tour! Have a very wonderful Valentine's Day and Anniversary! Love you, Missy
Guest 1232 says: Thanks Kenny--you're the best
*Northern Lights says: )applause Kenny, thanks for taking the
time out of your busy
schedule to come chat with us.
NanC/Missy says: It's that ability to recognize the wall that I never had the ability to do until your book Kenny.
LauraH says: I'm sure you've heard this a thousand times or more, but thank you for showing us the "how we made it through" that all other books only talk about. We shared your joys and pains. IT was incredibly beautiful.
Debbie says: Yes Kenny! Thank you for taking the time to chat
with us tonight!
[Kickin©] says: Thanks for taking the time out of your
busy life to share your experiences with us.
Moderator: One last one please....the next single?
Kloggins: "Now That I Know Love" is currently
the single and is no. 11 on the AC charts. We're hoping that it'll go top
ten this week. If so, it'll hang in there a while. Feel free to call your
stations and request it.
*?Valiant© says: Sure will Kenny!
LauraH says: I'm glad to hear that! You deserve so very much
for sharing so much. Have a great time in FL!
NanC/Missy says: Yea Kenny!!!!!
Kloggins: When NTIKL begins to fade, we will come with "Just Breathe." My hope is that "I'm Not Hiding" and NTIKL will pave the way and Just Breathe will bring it home. If "Just Breathe" doesn't hit, I fear that Columbia Records will give up on the Unimaginable Life. It's out of my hands.
Moderator: Kenny thank you always for touching our hearts so deeply with your music, your spirit....and for sharing your time and yourself here with us tonight.
