Reassessment Backlash
There has been a real backlash by people in Cobb County who have had their property reassessed recently by the Cobb County Assessors Office. Our officials say you are getting a tax cut when they cut your millage rate a half a mil. When your assessment goes up 50% or more, you know your tax bill will be much higher. Our sympathy goes out to senior citizens and others on a fixed income. Where are they going to get the extra money to pay these higher taxes?
CTCC's recommended actions were published recently in the MDJ and the AJC : 1) Appeal your reassessment; 2) Contact your County Commissioner;
3) Vote against tax increases such as the 1% sales tax increase for schools and the 1% sales tax for roads.
A solution for this problem is to bring California's Proposition 13 to Georgia. This would mean that your assessment could not be raised as long as you live in your home. The assessment would be redone upon the sale of your home.

Why the Chamber Pushes the 1% Sales Tax
The Cobb Chamber of Commerce represents the interests of business. The 1% sales tax for schools is a great benefit to business. The tax shifts the burden of paying for new schools from large property owners to individuals. When bonds are used to pay for schools, the cost is paid by a small increase in millage rates. Owners of large commercial and apartment complexes pay large property tax bills. The sales tax will mean a millage rollback and not an increase to businesses. The rollback of 1.8 mills in the sales tax proposal may save the average homeowner about $100, but it means 10's of thousands of dollars in savings to members of our chamber of commerce. Is it fair to shift the tax burden to pay for our schools to senior citizens who do not pay school taxes now, but will if this tax passes?
