Why the Chamber Pushes the 1% Sales Tax

The Cobb Chamber of Commerce represents the interests of business. The 1% sales tax for schools is a great benefit to business. The tax shifts the burden of paying for new schools from large property owners to individuals. When bonds are used to pay for schools, the cost is paid by a small increase in millage rates. Owners of large commercial and apartment complexes pay large property tax bills. The sales tax will mean a millage rollback and not an increase to businesses. The rollback of 1.8 mills in the sales tax proposal may save the average homeowner about $100, but it means 10's of thousands of dollars in savings to members of our chamber of commerce. Is it fair to shift the tax burden to pay for our schools to senior citizens who do not pay school taxes now, but will if this tax passes?
