Crochet in Wire
I have worked with silver and 14K gold-filled wire for over 12 years, but 2 1/2 years ago I discovered that silver wire could be found in very small gauges (26,28 and 30), and that wonderful things could be created with only a crochet hook.
Add beads and gemstones - you get magic...
I thought that I would use these pages for learning about working with wire, and would show various designs as I work on them and also answer any questions you have.
Working with wire is a bit different from the feel of standard crochet, but you easily get the hang of it. To begin with, you might want to head to the hardware store for brass or copper wire, in sizes of 30,32 or 34...and use a steel hook, from size 00-6 would be good. You may want to play with the wire first, or if you make a pair of rectangles 1 1/2 '' x 2'' you could make a good amulet bag. If you make smaller rectangles, you get earrings, or a pendant, to decorate with beads or pearls.
Some tips: slide each stitch back onto the hook, to where the flatpart of the hook is, it gives a good rounded stitch. After your piece is finished, go back and "open" any stitches that look flat or "squished" by inserting the hook and rotating it to even out the look. The good thing about using wire is that the design and stitches stay were you put them, if you need to stretch the stitches out a bit, do it. The bad part about wire is that the piece will tend to stretch anyway, so be careful. When making a bracelet, make it a bit small.
Imagination can run wild, and you get some good jewelry out of your practice. If you decide to try fine silver, any jewelry supply store will carry wire. There is also a wonderful wire available called Artistic Wire, in beautiful colors, and I get that from Soft Flex. They can be found at www.softflex.com.
Because of the wonderful response to crochet wire jewelry, I will be putting together some kits, that will have the wire, beads, hook, directions and a color picture of the finished project. For those who want to order just the patterns, I will now be offering them via email and through floppy disk. I can't quite self publish at this point in time and health, but I can get the patterns out the same way we publish our missing child education material. (check out the link to Somebody's Child) small plug. nothing scary, novels and plays for schools, law enforcement and families free....done with humor...and free....truly.....

This silver rose is a favorite of mine, it can be suspended on a chain, made up as a pin, or can just grace a table or small shelf, or in a bud vase.... your options are unlimited! It is soon to be featured as a workshop in Lapidary Journal...each petal is made and then, formed into a lifelike curve.
This beautiful onyx is set off by a classic frame, made of 16ga fine silver wire, but can also be made with 14Kgold fill wire...hugs the stone and bring out interest to a solid color stone. When you don't want to detract from the beauty of the stone, always frame it.
It is amazing what talking with friends can do...in this case it created a beautiful horn a plenty. I was talking to Cheryl Keegan, a very gifted lampwork glass artist....and she created some beautiful veggie beads. Well, i had to come up with a horn, and this is what we finished with. Lapidary Journal used this in one of their issues. November 98

I was hit by a surprise in the past year, one that was not a good thing. I was diagnosed with Carcinoid. a rare form of Cancer. The last 10 months have been interesting, with three major surgeries to remove tumors, or look for the primary site. The primary site is still a mystery. We have also learned that more have grown so it seems surgery will be on the horizon. But I tend to think of this as a chance for a unique craft show, in the past I have had patients, nurses and doctors come to buy my jewelry.... ewwwwwwwwww At least my bad perm will not be a concern......
I have also learned so much on Carcinoid, much of the information on the internet. The best site is the one listed below, run by a wonderful lady and now friend. This woman is indeed superwoman. If you want to learn more about this, please click.....

SeaFore's Original Patterns It is with a sad heart that I tell you that Karen Perkins, (C4) passed away suddenly on January 10, 1999. She and her family were on a vacation, and she had just completed her other love, skin diving. Karen did so many things so well, and was a wonderful friend. Her knowledge on crochet and design was fantastic, and she will be missed.
