Monday nite! Tonight was happy Paul: Here Comes A Regular, Swingin Party, If Only You Were Lonely, A.A.A. !?!?! ( he muttered something about that he saw we liked that AAA before he played it) Water baloons flying, Paul handing out sparklers in the crowd, moving his mic stand to the front of the stage, cranking up his MArshall stack (plugged in this time) to fire out Alex Chilton, talking about buying his dad some sandals today ("he said they were too heavy, the next thing I'm gonna buy him is a pine box with handles"), breaking his lamp, smashing his guitar (a cheap Les Paul copy), and saying that these were the funnest three days he's had all week. I want another show. Tomorrow. Please.

WOW !! This was an incredible night. Paul said Michael Bland had told him to rip not only the audience's front teeth out but their molars as well, and that he did. Alex Chilton (rockin version, brought the house down) Achin to be, Swingin Party, Here Comes A Regular, If Only you were lonely, A star is Bored, AAA (some people in the front row had made a sign, Paul saw it and said, "I see your AAA thing, but um..-he then strummed the first few chords and went on to say- geez it's the same fucking song" he then played it straight through -awesome), kicking the stall, eyes like sparks, no place for you, high time (opener), Best thing that never happened, Two days til tomorrow, mud into dirt, crackle and drag, All I really wanna do (asked the audience if anyone had ever met Bob Dylan, some said no, he said, "I think I did, but I'm not sure").

Other stuff: the bit about his parents before was really funny (bought my father some sandals he complained they were too heavy...next thing I'm buying him is a pine box with handles)anyone with any aging parent can relate..Someone shouted out , 'why did you release mono and make us buy that then release it with stereo?" Paul (in mock statesment voice), "well Mr.Donaldson" then ignored him...Someone else requested "All he wants to do is fish" Paul said something about it being fun to sing then said, "Chris are you here? (Mars??) then when he got no response said, "cocksucker"....Someone named Laurie is doing the sound (his wife??) he asked her a couple of times to turn the guitar up..the guitar he smashed was looked like a Les Paul junior copy its the reddish/purple one with the paisley (-ish), I've seen him play it before, it looks like it might be fixable just the neck snapped off..

Wow! i didn't see sunday's show, but monday's was far superior to saturday's, and saturday's was incredibly strong in it own right. whatever it was, monday night just rocked. at times, i was just waiting for a band to kick in behind him because he just rocked sooooo haaaaaard. the last couple of songs ('alex chilton', 'between love & like', and 'lookin' out forever'), i dunno, man. they were probably the best of the show; especially 'lookin''. at the end of 'lookin'', he smashed the neck off his git on the marshall. sandwiched in between those rocking last songs was a real shocker: 'a star in bored' on electric. this song has always been one of my favorites, and i was absolutely FLOORED by his performance of it. powerful & beautiful. 'aaa' was indeed played, and it was great. that "blacks crackle & drag" song (about poet sylvia plath?) is just amazing. seriously, i hope it turns up on a b side or something, because it is just that great.

the show was as a whole a pretty powerfully emotional performance, but the funny moments were hilarious. his comments about tommy's background vox in the middle of 'achin' to be' ("i miss his part. i don't miss tommy. just the part."), the protracted water balloon fight, handing out sparklers to the audience, the comments about 'if only you were lonely' ("i feel drunk just playing it!"), his evading the audience question about why "mono" was released separately, and then together with "stereo" ("i'd like to address that question, but.... mr. donaldson?"). all priceless paul. so, to sum up, with all of the funny moments, what i take away from monday's show was the sheer power of the performance (emotionally, volume, style, everything). paul needs to either get the mats back together or put together a crackerjack band for a few shows, because after monday night it is clear that he still knows how to, and appears that he wants to, tear a few venues down.
