» Paul Westerberg 2005 Tour - New York «
Thanks to all the folks who came up and introduced themselves at the shows, it was really nice to meet everyone. Got a lot of great pictures, click here to get see them.
Apr. 26 & 27, 2005 @ The Supper Club, New York, New York
Night 1 was a mixed affair, some great moments though. The show ended with a messy version of "I Will Dare" after which, Paul told us: "You are all my people and therefore you need to die". No, I don't know what It meant, but it seemed oddly affectionate and was said with a smile.
Night 2, night 2, what to say? Kick. Ass. Best show of the tour, according to those in a position to know, and it was just a great, magical night of rock and roll. Pumped up crowd and Paul and the band in rare form. Covers of "Different Drum" and "Borstal Breakout", wildly different as they may be, were both perfection.
Night 1: April 26
I thought the show was a blast. Definitely one of Paul's "messy" nights, but personally I find those to be a lot of fun. If I want to hear the song perfectly, I'll put on the album. These messy shows offer a better glimpse of who Paul is.
Highlights included:
- opening with "Stain Yer Blood" and "Final Hurrah" - two tunes I hadn't heard live before and both kicked ass
- playing at least a portion of "Customer" (never thought I'd even see him play that much)
- great covers - Sham 69, "Live Forever" (w/ slightly creepy mention of Shaver's kid killing himself), "Different Drum," Dyan's "Only a Hobo," Allman's "Whipping Post," BB King, and naturally "I Think I Love You"
- absolutely killer versions "Anyway's All Right" (even though the bridge was missing), "Gunshy" and "Alex Chilton"
- watching Paul and the bassist become blood brothers, with the guitarists comment of "I'm sure this is perfectly safe"
- Paul charging the guitarist for taking away his drink (forget what song that was during)
- His false starts at "I Will Dare" and "How Can You Like Him?"
- And hands down, the moment of the night, as Kathy already mentioned, his closing words of "You are all my people and therefore you need to die." Affectionate? Angry? Who knows? But so f*ckin' perfect.
In no particular order after the first 6 songs, here's what he played to the best of my memory:
Stain Yer Blood/Final Hurrah/*Sham 69*/Customer (kinda)/Someone Take the Wheel/Merry Go Round/Live Forever/Kiss Me on the Bus/Makin' Me Go/Now I Wonder/Let the Bad Times Roll/As Far As I Know/Little Mascara/Different Drum/Valentine/Pyschopharmacology/Mr. Rabbit/Swinging Party/Only a Hobo/Whipping Post (aborted)/Vampires and Failures/*BB King*/Anyway's All Right" (minus the bridge)/Love Untold/What a Day For A Night/ Waitress In The Sky/Skyway/Gunshy/Can't Hardly Wait/Knockin On Mine/I Will Dare (aborted)/How Can You Like Him?(aborted)/Alex Chilton/High Time
Encore: I Think I Love You/I Will Dare (about 2/3's then stopped)

Like everybody else here, Night 2 really was perfect. Probably my favorite Paul show I've seen, and one of the tops I've ever seen by anyone. Paul and the band were perfect, totally on. It made for the perfect Paul combo here in NYC: night 1 is messy, 'mats-esque Paul, night 2 is the genius. Best of both worlds.
Highlights included:
- That unbelievable take on AAA with the bridge from Anyway's All Right
- A complete I Will Dare is special enough, but then that punked out last third of it was amazing
-Blistering versions of Making Me Go, As Far As I Know (Michael pounds those drums like nobody's business), IOU, Left of the Dial
-An aching, amazing version of How Can You Like Him?
-Another good batch of covers: If I Had a Hammer, Live Forever, Different Drum, Borstal Breakout, and two towards the very top of the show that I didn't recognize
-joking momentary attempts at both Down by the River (threatened to be "25-minutes long") and Freebird (despite Kevin's rightful protests)
- Paul asking for requests, and then offering funny, matter of fact responses ("I heard The Ledge. We don't know that." or "I heard three Replacements songs: Bastards of Young, Bastards of Young and (mimics crowd screaming)")
- Paul's impromptu version of Things, complete with singng "abreviation point" when he jumped to the end of the song, and then partially improvised one more verse
-the changing of the instruments during the Can't Hardly Wait break (great job with the vocals Jim)
-most of all, Paul and the band returning after the mic's were already taken down to perform Alex Chilton
Seriously, a just absolutle stellar show. Thanks guys!
