This section, as they say, is very much under construction. Eventually, I hope to post transcripts of a variety of presentations about alternative medicine, cancer, and other topics that I have made to audiences both recently and going back a number of years. For the moment, there are links to two transcribed presentations from the archives, described below in chronological order:
The OTA presentation (transcript number one, above) is a five minute talk given to the panel advising and the staff of the Office of Technology Assessment's four year long study of Unconventional Cancer Treatments. Some of my colleagues and I had followed the highly politicized OTA process very closely, and the March 9, 1990 public meeting in Washington, D.C. where we all testified was our last opportunity to go on the record about our concerns before the book length document was published in September 1990. The OTA report wound up being a seminal document in the long and difficult history of official evaluation of alternative cancer treatments. In many ways it set the stage for the creation of the NIH's Office of Alternative Medicine one year later. The second transcript above is the text of my provocative analysis of National Health Care Reform: The Hidden History / The Hidden Costs, originally delivered at the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians' (AANP) medical convention in San Diego, California in September 1994. Do you remember the Clintons' ambitious federal health care reform plan? After reading this speech, you, too, may be glad that it went down to defeat - and be concerned that socialized medicine appears to be making a significant political comeback in 2007. |
