Putney Amateur Regatta 1999 Competitors Briefing Notes

Putney Amateur Regatta COMPETITORS - PLEASE NOTE

Entries for Putney Amateur Regatta in any year are accepted on the understanding and condition that the Regatta, its organisers, agents, officials and servants are indemnified by the competitor(s) against all claims, howsoever caused, arising out of the competitors participation in the events run by the Regatta, including any personal injury, loss or accident, howsoever occasioned that the competitor(s) may suffer.

Competitors understand that they are participating in the Regatta entirely at their own risk and that the Regatta organisers, their agents, officials and servants will not be held responsible for any such injury, loss or accident as foresaid.

Unless advised to the contrary when competitors initially report to Regatta Control, or at any other time during the Regatta, the Regatta organisers understand that Competitors are all medically fit to take part in the Regatta and that should any medical condition occur which might affect a competitors capability to take part in the event Regatta Control will be advised immediately.

Putney Amateur Regatta does not loan or hire any form of equipment or clothing to Competitors or others. Any equipment or clothing that is borrowed, lent or hired at Putney Amateur Regatta is not hired, lent or borrowed with any agreement or permission from the Regatta, neither is the Regatta responsible in any way for that equipment or clothing, its condition or performance.

Responsibility for ensuring that all entrants fulfil the minimum ARA safety swimming requirements

rests with the Entering Officer of the Club concerned.

(ARA Water Safety Code 3.1. & 4.1.)

Safety of competitors, spectators, officials and other river users is the first and overriding concern of Putney Amateur Regatta. Competitors and others are advised that the Regatta programme may be changed or cancelled if a river users safety appears in any way compromised.

All competitors are warned under no circumstances to cut through the moorings at Putney Hard. This is a dangerous and foolhardy manoeuvre and to do so will invite disqualification or other penalty available to the Race Committee.

All competitors MUST present a valid ARA identity card and points book to Regatta Registration at NatWest Rowing Club or purchase a day ticket from Registration before they will be allowed to compete. This is an ARA ruling that the Regatta fully supports and cannot, in any circumstances, vary, change or interpret.

It is the competitors responsibility to collect all ARA ID cards and points books when their interest in the Regatta ceases. The Regatta will do its best to return any uncollected documentation COD but assumes no responsibility for such documentation once the Regatta is over.

All competitors and their supporters understand that they enter, compete, spectate or otherwise take part in Putney Amateur Regatta at their own risk and responsibility.

Competitors are responsible for presenting themselves and their equipment in a proper state for competition on the Tideway. All coxswains, including those in front loaders, must wear a buoyancy aid or life jacket to the standard approved by the ARA.

Putney Amateur Regatta does not own or lend equipment of any kind, especially buoyancy aids and life jackets. Any equipment or clothing, especially buoyancy aids or life jackets, borrowed while at Putney Amateur Regatta is not and does not become the responsibility of the Regatta or its officials.

The Regatta Control Commission are charged with checking all boats and competitors equipment before any crew is allowed to race.

Particular attention will be made to heel restraints, safety bow balls, fins, rudders, steering gear and the general suitability and fitness of the craft for the specified purpose of racing on the Tideway.

All boats and crews must therefore present themselves at Putney Hard with boats out of the water, to facilitate Control Commission checking. After checking, all boats will be marked on the bows with removable sticky red/white tape to signify to Start Marshals, Umpires and others that a boat has been checked by the Control Commission.

All Coxswains and Lightweight competitors must present themselves at NatWest Rowing Club for Weigh-in, marking and the issue of a weight certificate before racing. The weight certificate must be preserved safe and dry during the Regatta as winning Coxswains and Lightweight crews will be re weighed before points cards are updated and trophies are issued.

Current ARA weight limits are to be found in the Rowing Almanac and in the ARA Rules For Racing. A chart will also be displayed at Weigh in.

Coxboxes and other equipment are considered by the ARA to be part of the boat's equipment and do not count as weight for coxswains. If a coxswain is to carry weight then that weight MUST NOT be attached in any way to that coxswain.

It is a condition of the PLA granting permission for the Regatta to take place that all coxswains and other steersmen make themselves familiar with the "International Rules for the Prevention of Collision at Sea" and the "Port of London Authority bylaws", both of which govern navigation [coxing!] on the tidal Thames and which will be posted up outside NatWest Rowing Club.

A sketch map of the Course will also be found outside NatWest Rowing Club.

At the Start, Umpires are under instruction to penalise excessive 'touching up' to gain undue advantage.

Every effort will be made to run the Regatta to the advertised programme timings; events beyond the Race Committees control, however, may prevent this. It is the Competitors duty and responsibility to monitor the progress of the Regatta to ensure that they are always able to present themselves for racing at the appropriate time.

Putney Amateur Regatta regrets that financial considerations force us to award trophies only when three crews have entered for an event

Please allow plenty of time to get to Putney, unload and rig your boats etc., on Regatta day. Traffic in, around and leading to the area can get very congested. Contact [mobile] [to be provided in January 1999] if you have a severe problem on the day

Finally, the Committee wishes you safe, happy and successful days racing.
