SheilaJ's Pond after Hurricane Isabel
My Pond After Hurricane Isabel
I built the pond against the south wall of our house to protect it from the usual wind storms that we get here. However, Hurricane Isabel blew in from the east and the side yard between our house and the neighbors became a wind tunnel. It was quite frightening gusting against our bedroom wall all night. The good news was that we had no damage to the house at all, unlike many of our neighbors who lost siding, shingles, and even had chimneys topple over.

The bad news was the damage to the tropical landscaping around my pond, which was just reaching its best at that time of year. The butterfly bush to the left blew over (I later staked it back up). The black magic taro blew over and down to the bottom of the pond (able to pull up with minimal leaf loss).
The banana tree, which I had nurtured for over a year from a pup and was finally about 6 feet high, suffered a bent stem. After consulting the banana experts at GardenWeb.com, I cut off the stem just below the bend and it did regrow another foot before frost came. Observe how the leaves, which used to be paddle shaped, were shredded by the wind so that they look like palm fronds.
So much for the "Lifetime Limited Warranty" on the trellis, which I had owned for maybe 4 whole months. (What did I expect for $12?!) Luckily, the passionflower vine was flexible and didn't break. I later propped up the trellis. When I cut down the vine after the first heavy frost, I discovered how damaged the base of the trellis was and threw it away.
