2 CONT "TRAVELERS REST, SC.  Early Preston Rochester, 82, of 10 Rochester
2 CONC Road, husband of the late Amanda Amos Rochester died November 3, 1991
2 CONC at the Piedmont Sentry Care in Piedmont, SC following a period of
2 CONC declining health. A native of Greenville County, Mr. Rochester was
2 CONC born on June 12, 1909, a son of the late William Perry and Mary Louise
2 CONC Nichols Rochester. Mr. Rochester was retired from the Judson Mill in
2 CONC Greenville and was a member of the Forestville Baptist Church where he
2 CONC served as a Deacon and President of the Fellowship Sunday School
2 CONC Class.

2 CONT Suvivors include a son: Perry F. Rochester of Decatur, Ga., two
2 CONC daughters, Louise Greene, Marietta, SC: Gaynell Dodgens of Travelers
2 CONC Rest; and three sisters, Ruby Donald, Greenville, SC, Florence Dudley,
2 CONC Simpsonville, SC, and Laura Johnson of Marcola, Oregon. Grandchildren,

2 CONC church cemetery. The body is at the Howze Mortuary, Travelers Rest,
2 CONC and will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m.  Active Pallbearers are
2 CONC as follows and are asked to meet at the church at 12:15 p.m.

2 CONC on D street in the city of Anderson, SC. Jacob is listed as 71 years
2 CONC of age and working in a cotton mill. Malissa is listed as 66 years of
2 CONC age. Their daughter, Sallie, son Louis, and grandson, Willie Russell
2 CONC are living with them at this time. Louis, listed as 23 years of age,
2 CONC and Willie, age 14, are also employed in the cotton mill.

2 CONT Jacob's obituary, found in the August 17th, 1921 edition of the Keowee
2 CONC Courier, reads as follows:

2 CONT "Jacob Rochester died on Aug. 9th at his home in the Rocky Knoll
2 CONC section. He was born 76 years ago in the Tamassee section. The funeral
2 CONC was held on Aug. 10th at 4 p.m. when the body was laid to rest in the
2 CONC Neville cemetery, the services being conducted by pastor of the
2 CONC deceased, Rev. L. M. Lyda. Mr. Rochester leaves his wife and six
2 CONC children to mourn his death. The children are J. C. Rochester of
2 CONC Atlanta, GA, W. P. and L. E. Rochester of Walhalla, and Miss Sallie
2 CONC Rochester of Walhalla, Mrs. P. H. Dockins of Anderson, SC, and J. P.
2 CONC Rochester of Georgia. The deceased had many friends in Oconee who will
2 CONC learn of his death with sincere regret. The sympathy of many goes to
2 CONC the bereaved ones in their sorrow."

2 CONT Jacob's death certifcate states that he was 76 years old at the time
2 CONC of his death on Aug. 9th, 1921 and gives his month of birth as
2 CONC January. However the 1850 census gives his age as 3 years on his last
2 CONC birthday which would have been in January of that year. The birthdate
2 CONC given above is estimated based on the census record since it was taken
2 CONC so close to his birth month given on the death certificate.

2 CONC of serious illness. Mrs. White was born in Rabun County, GA, a
2 CONC daughter of the late Jacob K. and Malissa Phillips Rochester. She had
2 CONC lived most of her life in Oconee County and was a Baptist. She was
2 CONC employed by Kenneth Mill for many years. Surviving are her husband,
2 CONC Claude White of Walhalla, two brothers, Louie Rochester of Seneca,
2 CONC Peter Rochester of Atlanta, GA. Funeral services will be conducted at
2 CONC Davenport Funeral Home at 4 p.m. Friday by the Rev. J. L. Adddis, Jr.

2 CONC Rochester, she being a sister of J. C. Rochester of Walhalla. She

2 CONC relatives and friends, to mourn her death. She was a consistant member
2 CONC of the church, having joined in this county early in life. On Thursday
2 CONC afternoon her body was laid to rest in the Neville cemetery, west of
2 CONC Walhalla, Rev. J. A. Bond, of the Baptist church conducting funeral
2 CONC services, in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing friends.

2 CONT "Nicholas Rochester came to Westmoreland County, Virginia about 1689.
2 CONC This is the first time any land transactions conducted by Nicholas are
2 CONC found in Virginia. He was married before coming to America and had one
2 CONC known son, William, who came with him."

2 CONT "On December 26, 1689, Nicholas purchased from John Jenkins, a
2 CONC Planter, 100 acres in Westmoreland Co. VA. The 100 acres purchased by
2 CONC Nicholas was located close to the Richmond County line and
2 CONC approximately three miles from Warsaw in Richmond County(Not related
2 CONC to the city of Richmond.) Although this deed is not recorded, there is
2 CONC mention of this land by date and description in a boundry dispute with
2 CONC John Dunkin on November 2, 1726 (Bond Book 11, page 64.) "..there is a
2 CONC certain parcel of land situated lying and being the forest of Nominy
2 CONC and County aforesaid boundeth as followeth (viz) beginning at the
2 CONC mouth of the second branch thence from a poplar standing at the mouth
2 CONC of the branch to a marker white oak standing in the line which divided
2 CONC the land of John Jenkins from that which was bought of Randolph Kirk
2 CONC by Peter Dunkin, father to the above named John Dunkin which said land
2 CONC is to come on a straight line from the former beginning of the
2 CONC aforesaid poplar and is the same land mentioned in a deed of sale from

2 CONT "The Order Book 1690-1698, Part 3, (1694-1698),page 211a, 29 July
2 CONC 1696, told of Nicholas Rochester being summoned to give evidence in a
2 CONC suit between John Scrimgeon, Indian, and James Orchard on behalf of
2 CONC the Plaintiff and having attended 10 days: It was ordered that John
2 CONC Scrimgeon pay him 400 pds. tobacco."

2 CONC made a deed of gift to his son William on May 26, 1719. In this
2 CONC document he provided for his plantation to descend to the oldest son
2 CONC of William and his issue.  In case the oldest son produced no issue,
2 CONC then it was to go to the younger son and his issue."

2 CONT "The County Court of Westmoreland issued the following order on May
2 CONC 27, 1719: "Nicholas Rochester, an ancient person, is upon his mecon

2 CONC Rochester, died and his mother moved to North Carolina. He served in
2 CONC the Continental Army from North Carolina, and after the Revolutionary
2 CONC War was over, he moved back to Virginia and then to Hagerstown,
2 CONC Maryland. He was a land speculator and there is some correspondence
2 CONC between he and Daniel Boone. He made one or more visits into Kentucky
2 CONC and purchased land. Later, he and some other land speculators moved on
2 CONC north into New York State and founded the city of Rochester, New York.

2 CONT The land where the city of Rochester, New York now stands was
2 CONC purchased by Nathaniel Rochester and two associates in 1803. Nathaniel
2 CONC Rochester laid out the community in 1811 and named it for himself,
2 CONC with permanent settlement beginning in 1812. The community was linked
2 CONC to the Erie Canal in 1822 and the Canal was completed in 1825. The
2 CONC city of Rochester was incorporated in 1834, approximately 3 years
