Have you ever had a dream where you hear original music that you really
love? It happens to me from time to time. Then I wake up, and by
the time I can do anything about it, the music is gone. This happened
to me just a week ago Thursday (mid-October 2005). I dreamed I was singing a
song of love and loss and the sea in a voice bigger, deeper, and clearer
than my own. If only I were able to carry a tape recorder into my dreams, I
could have saved this song: |

The Wide Ocean Sea
by Peter Alway
I'll not trust my ears
for they may be mistaken
I'll not trust my eyes
for what do they see?
A lady so fair
who has not yet been taken
I'll follow her far
'cross the wide ocean sea
The life here is bitter
since I was forsaken
The women they stare
Then they all look away
It's been twenty years
that my heart has been broken
I wish I were far
'cross the wide ocean sea
I'll go ask the sea
Will she come back to me
The wind knows the answer
But she's not telling me
I'll not trust my ears
Though I think I hear singing
I'll not trust my eyes
It’s too dark to see
Will she sit by my side
When my time comes for dying
And sing me a song
Of the wide ocean sea
And sing me a song
Of the wide ocean sea
This time, I was able to save the song by singing as soon as I was awake
until I had recorded it. The only words that actually came from the dream
are "may be mistaken." The rest came came during the following day, as did the
melody of the bridge. I'm rather pleased with how it turned out. I
think it's as good as the dream, and a few people at OVFF seemed to like it as
well
I'll add that the .pdf version doesn't exactly match these words and chords
for the midi arrangement. If you are trying to figure it out from
listening to the midi, I changed the last chord of the last complete verse to a
Bb chord, and at the end of the coda where I repeated the last two lines, I
played a Bb again, followed by an F before resolving to a C.
