I've visited many schools around
Britain and particularly in Norfolk where I live. I've also performed at book fairs and library events. I enjoy working with children, who give an
instant and honest response to an artist's endeavours!
I normally do four sessions about an hour long when I visit a school. These consist of me reading one or two of my books to a class-size group and then drawing for them on a flipchart. The group provides the ideas, I throw in a little wit and the drawings
appear as though by magic! The school gets to keep the drawings.
I try to sneak in some lessons about how thinking before you draw can
improve your work and about how
illustration is simply storytelling with pictures. But my main aim is to
entertain and inspire.
With older children I can do longer workshops on writing or drawing. We can consider how to think up ideas before writing and have a go at
creating a story. We can look at and try out techniques illustrators and cartoonists use to control character expression. We can learn how artists look at real things and have a go at drawing portraits.
