There are several things to do to begin your search for a birth relative:

  1. Sign up with online database registries such as the Canadian Adoptees Registry Inc. (CARI) or CANADOPT
  2. Register with the provincial adoption registry in the province where the adoption was finalized. The laws vary greatly from province to province. See Canadian Links.
  3. Request your non-identifying background or social history information from the agency or private agent (such as doctor or lawyer) that handled the adoption.
  4. Become a member of a support group such as Parent Finders National Capital Region (insert link back to Membership) for search and reunion advice and support.
  5. Join a group located in or near the area you are searching in as it will be in a better position to offer local search advice.  See Canadian Links.
  6. Join an online support website available for Birth Mothers and Adoptees at :  Canadian Council of Natural Mothers
