Big Bad Johns

emember "roots rock" the first time around, circa early 1980's? The Blasters, Jason and the Scorchers, the Gun Club, early Cramps and Tav Falco? If you were a hipster back then, the Clash and X were still spinning on your turntable, in between Gene Vincent and Lefty Frizzell. Those roots bands didn't play too many ballads, they were more than just slightly to the left of Nashville, and they sure as hell didn't fit into any radio format at the time.

ig Bad Johns took their inspiration from that scene. In 1995, they released a CD called "Plymouth Rock" on Feralette Records to much critical acclaim; the Boston Phoenix called it "low frills / big heart rock and roll, with hot-licks guitar and a fat flat-four beat.... a dirty-assed rock and roll gem..." They're back with a new set of recordings for their yet-unnamed new CD, recorded at the East Coast mecca of country punk and rig rock, Coyote Studios in Brooklyn, NY. This time they enlisted the help of drummer extrordinaire Will Rigby (db's, Matthew Sweet) and producer James Mastro (Health and Happiness Show, Bongos's).

he new material ranges from tequila-soaked Tex-Mex to NYC punk straight from the glory days of Max's Kansas City to raucous drinking anthems (with a nod to their pals, the late, lamented Beat Farmers). The Johns have big instrumental chops as well as big attitude, and their scorchers (which is most of 'em) really burn. In addition to having a large and dedicated following in their home town of New Haven, CT, they play frequently in NYC and have done numerous other successful gigs from Richmond to Toronto.
