Comments about the web site: I am interested in your workshop. However, I cannot sing, hum, or anything else to help me with music, although I have a few years of studying piano as a child. I have now a keyboard and I would like to understand the way it works - following the brief instruction book doesn't help much. Do you think that your workshop could help me? Thank you in advance.

Comments about the web site: I'm not sure if you're asking whether my workshop will help you play music....or help you play your particular keyboard. If you're asking about music, I can probably help you learn to play your favorite songs. Check out the free lessons found in this web site, and let me know ANY areas you don't understand. These lessons are provided in order to give interested students a "head start" in the workshop itself. If you're asking how your particular keyboard works, we will NOT discuss the variety of electronic instruments that are available, or how they work. Your instruction book is your best resource. If you have specific questions, please give me a call. I'll be glad to share all I know with you! Being able to hum, whistle or sing HELPS when you play by ear. Something has to guide your thoughts when you play music. If you cannot hum, whistle or sing, CAN YOU RECOGNIZE SONGS WHEN YOU HEAR THEM? If not, I would wonder what attraction playing a keyboard instrument has for you. I'm very serious.....can you recognize the tune of a song, when you hear it? Do you sing to yourself? If you know the melody of your favorite songs, the Piano Magic Workshop is a most useful experience. On the other hand, if you cannot recognize a familiar tune when you hear it, I think music may not be the best hobby for you to adopt. It could be extremely difficult to succeed in playing music, if you can't recognize the tunes you would like to play. Ya gotta have a "song in your heart." Please stay in touch. Thanks for visiting. I've had fun practicing with the playing by ear method. Do you offer followup sessions with the more advanced stuff? Your homepage is very enjoyable. I have browsed through the entire shebang and will visit again. Your inspiring and uplifting writings enable me to relate to things in my own life as I have created chapter after chapter of history (or HERstory, as the case may be) of my own. Thanks again! Comments about the web site: It's a good page. I can play by ear, I have been able to since I can remember. However, I really don't understand how if you're not 'gifted' as you say, you can play by ear. You say that the first three notes of 'Michael Row a Boat to shore' is the C chord. Well, not necessarily. What if the person were thinking of the tune in another key, then it wouldn't be the C chord. I see what you're getting at though. I really do find it hard to imagine though that anyone can do it.

Comments about the web site: To BFD4, Hi, & thanks for your comments. You make a good point...if a person is "thinking" in a key other than "C" the first three tones of Michael Row The Boat will be the chord of whatever key they are thinking in. But, that's the lesson on transposition. Regardless, the thought process for playing a song remains identical from key to key (or pitch to pitch). It's the thought process that is most important to understand. When you know how music "thinks," you can play that music in any key. As for whether everyone can play by ear...a lot more can than do. Sure is fun, too! Thanks again, Michael Anderson pianomagic@aol.com

Comments about the web site: Your web site is nicely done. I've designed two myself, http://members.home.net/intellex/ and http://wwww.whitehawk.com/intellex. I'm intrigued by your by ear method. When I was a teenagers I took lessons in popular music and I seem to recall (except for the business with the left hand) that the technique was much the same, although I never did learn to play by ear. It's not that I can't identify notes. I can pick out a single note easily when someone plays it on the piano and tell them whether it's a C or D# or whatever. What I have difficulty with is putting together a tune on the piano, even though I can hear the melody in my head. In any event, I once had a friend who played in the local black church and he could really belt out that gospel music. Of course, he did it by ear and couldn't read music. It made me ill to see how he played. It still bothers me.

Comments about the web site: Hello Michael, I am still practing about 1 hour per day on keyboard. I now own 3 keyboards, with my latest purchase of a kiawa 5000w, and truly love to play it. I still did not get your music you sent me, but I purchased some books with the songs I wanted in them. I sometimes play for hours, but I still do not play by ear but probably by memory instead because of the heavy practice time. I love to play and have played in public during the holidays. Look forward to your trip to ABAC at Tifton, GA this spring. I want my sister and daughter to take your class if they can. Can you believe a person with 3 keyboards and a piano that 3 months ago could not play anything? I have a stand with one keyboard up on top of the other, with PA system speakers, etc. I love to sit and play by myself for hours. I think I have gone music crazy. I still need help on playing by ear, even though I am beginning to hear the sounds. I truly want to be able to hear a band playing, and be able to sit in and play with them on songs without a book! see you in Tifton! Comments about the web site: Hi Micheal, I got your book about 6 months ago and actually called you about it...you'll probably remember because I told you about a "Piano Magic" class that was held over here in California and you informed me that it was most likely somebody using your name because you haven't expanded over here yet.(I hope that issue got resolved by the way) Well anyways, I studied your book and found it very eye opening, imformative, and exciting. Infact within the same week I started playing the melody parts of tunes in my head. I started to understand and think like the piano for the first time. I basically just read the book once, and put it down... the rest was just practice. And now 6 months later, I can play the melody parts of songs(as well as some chords) on the radio, while their playing. All I do is find the key that there playing in... and actually thats probably the only time that I have your book open...(to find the right key) But I'll have those down in a little bit to. I imagine that if I practiced consistantly through out that 6 mths I would be a Hec of a lot better than I am right now. For anyone thinking about buying the book...its Highly recommended. Just apply the methods and practice and your own your way....... Thanks Micheal, for your methods, as well as your enthusiam. I wait in anticipation and look foward to the future... on the piano. Comments about the web site: Dear Mr. Anderson I've enjoyed your web sight. I've always wanted to play the piano. I have my grandma's old piano, but never have learned to play. I've tried to take piano lessons in the past but just did't have time to study scales or notes and I was young back then and really wasnt interested then, but now as I've gotten older I wished I had been gifted enough to play without having to take a bunch of lessons I didn't have time to take. Your web is so informitive. I have planned to take your class on feb 7th at the ABAC class being held in Moultrie. It has been my dream to learn to play and play for my church in time of need. I can't wait to learn, I sure hope you can make my dream come true, it sure would surprise my family as well. Hope to see you soon. Thanks' Karla Casteloes

Comments about the web site: Michael Anderson, Cynthia Fields bought your credit card for her friend last week. Well I'm the friend Reginald Lee. I emailed you Saturday but you didn't respond back,it was a long e-mail. The thing is, I'm have a bit of not understanding certain parts of the book. My questions will be # numbered. Thanks #1. Starting with chapter 6 I beleive, it tells me to play the chords with my left. Then on the next chapters to peck with my right. Every musician I've seen, does the opposite. Why do you have it set up like this. #2.In the book there are beginings of songs. well its chord, Peck Peck Peck Peck. After you hit the chord and two pecks the song just dies. I know the whole song in my head but it dosen't sound like that when I play it. How am I suppose to keep it sounding full. #3. About the chords you only dealt with 3 majors which C sound the lowest, and the pitch of G and F just go up higher. How can I do songs with just those 3 chords, because I don't understand. #4. The appendix in the back. Yes you gave the rest of the major and then all the minors. What do I do with them to make music? Mr. Anderson I love music and as I told you I am a drummer. But Its something about the keyboard that have some type of uniqe pattern for all chord. (the majors, dims, augs, minors,....) You have to help me out let me see the light. please don't give me a two sentence answer. Explain! in percise detail. I took time to try you product, now I'm asking you to take time with me. Thank You again Reginald Lee my address is bigboodybenz@hotmail.com PS not only answer my questions but if there is any other info I need to know tell me that to because I am motivated in learning this. Comments about the web site: Great website. I took piano for eight years, but the first four years(as far as I am concerned)were a waste. The teacher that I had wanted someone who could already play by ear so he taught me very litte. I did learn to play, but he taught me nothing about chords, fingering or timing. The next four years were like starting all over and I hated it. I now wish I had applied myself more and had had a better teacher. I can play only by music and I have a strong desire to play by ear. I think your book could help me. Thanks a lot. Could you maybe have a workshop in North Carolina? I live in the Charlotte area and would love to see one in my area. Thanks. Donna H.

I have often had dreams of playing great songs that have never been written. the piano is like part of my soul... can you understand. I had a piano in my bedroom for five years from 13-18. It was my great aunt's who I live with she told me if she dies I could have it. She died after I moved away and other realtives took it. This is where depression started. I played by ear all of this time and was getting quite good at it. Years have passed and its the only thing I ever wanted. It caused big arguments with me and my husband around X-mas and birthday times. Just recently I move into a house and there sat a poorly tune piano. I told the owner I would not rent the house unless it stayed. Now my children play. what an incredible gift to be able to play. Thanks for the space to express. Crickett

I must say I was quite impressed! Of course I'm not naive enough to believe that one could play like that even after a year of effort, but it sure sets one's sites on the prize! Have you ANY examples of what a fairly good student could play after a couple of months work with just your book as his guide? Or, simply: what reasonble expectations can a beginner expect after practicing with your book for, say, two-three months? Also, someone wrote here that they couldn't afford the book, but would have attended the Workshop-- your book at the site sells for $19.95 plus S and H. Is the book price a misprint?   Surely your 3-hour workshop is alot more than that! Thank you very much and continued success! Eddie P.S.: Are you familiar with the Duane Shinn "Chord Piano" course? Does your course do the same thing? I'd rather spend for yours if it can accomplished the same playing results. His course is alot higher in price. Email is welcome from ALL who have taken the course by the book. I'd REALLY love to know what your personal feelings are and how you consider your playing ability to be in comparision to the promises made here.

Comments about the web site: RESPONSE TO THE PREVIOUS POST: Hi Eddie, Thanks for writing and asking good questions! As you can well imagine, the range of student results from any method is from one extreme to the other...with most results falling somewhere in the middle. I am unfamiliar with the Shinn method you mentioned, but trust his method is as good as any. Most author/creators who take the time to create a course have something worth saying...or they just wouldn't be saying it! Whether you learn a "C chord" or a "C# dim maj 7" from Duane Shinn, Patti Carlson, Roger Williams or even ME(!!!!!!!), it's the exact same chord from one method to the next....and still works the same way in music that it did when the physical laws of tone were postulated by Pythagoras 2500 years ago. That being said, the WAY one explains the info seems to make all the difference in how a student understands it. Thus far, 98.8% of almost 5000 students I have personally taught were able to "play by ear" with both hands within the first two hours of my workshop. The info is presented the same for beginners and advanced musicians alike. They are able to USE the info according to their previous experience and ability to "think" independently. Some of my students have been absolute beginners with no prior experience or instrument. Within a month, they were able to appear on local news TV programs and take "call in" requests to demonstrate their "uncanny" ability. It is NOT uncommon for students of Piano Magic to experience INSIGHT that opens a mental door of creativity. Sadly, I am aware of two cases where the student became so wrapped up in their progress that it threatened their marriage...until they purchased an electronic instrument with headphones! :) I am in the process of setting up a MEMBERS ONLY area on the Piano Magic Website. My book will be featured, along with audio clips explaining the info. I'll also include audio music clips to demonstrate the info. Later on, I'll try to incorporate internet video clips as well, but currently that is a "wee bit" beyond my understanding to accomplish. I'll get there though. The primary purpose of having the MEMBERS ONLY site is to accomodate my international students who do not want to pay shipping costs that equal or exceed the price of the book. I understand this! In addition, I doubt that it would be affordable to travel to Australia or Europe to offer a workshop either. The MEMBERS ONLY area will be an attempt to make my PIANO MAGIC WORKSHOP, as well as the ADVANCED WORKSHOP, as accessible as possible to anyone...everywhere. Fees through sponsoring Colleges and Universities are set by each school (not by me). Prices range from $55.00 to $89.00 per student. The MEMBERS ONLY registration fee is expected to be $52.00 ($1.00 per week for a 52 week membership). Initially, previous workshop students and owners of any edition of my book will be able to find access codes, hidden within the book, to gain free entry for ONE year. Developing this web site is a major time consuming project, but I hope to have much of it ready for the public sometime in June. Information on the MEMBERS ONLY web site will always be "an evolving work in progress". Members will also have the opportunity to consult directly with me, or with each other, to share thoughts, ideas and inspirations! Eddie, thanks for kind comments regarding "Danny Boy". Although it sounds complicated to play, it is easy to understand what I'm doing. The purpose of PIANO MAGIC, in any form, is to relay that understanding to others. IT IS PURE JOY TO PLAY THIS WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And who knows...the day may come that I'll charge MORE than Duane Shinn...whatever that is!!!!!!!!?! ;) Right now, I'm into changing the way music is taught...and THOUGHT, by the people who WANT to play for self expression. No better therapy for making life feel good exists IMHO! Finally, I AM trying to get some of my students to allow me to record interviews with them, telling about their prior experience in music, what they experienced as a result of PIANO MAGIC, and then let them PLAY for the listener to demonstrate their ability after so many weeks or months. Let me tell you...PEOPLE ARE EXTREMELY SHY!!! I expect some of them to follow through though. It's fun trying to motivate them! :) If you're learning to play, I would suggest to try ALL courses that interest you. Rarely is it a bad investment, unless the price is too high. In that case, there are ALWAYS good alternatives. Price does NOT necessarily reflect increased value or usability for the student! Did I answer your questions? If not, please write back. Thanks again. Michael Anderson

Hi Eddie,

You don't have to do a "lot" of research to find out how many tones make up a chord. Even in the FREE pages of the Piano Magic web site you'll learn that a CHORD HAS A MINIMUM OF THREE TONES! If there are fewer than THREE DIFFERENT TONES played at one time...it isn't a chord. Regardless of who what where and how you learn, CHORDS are always the same. Every Major chord, regardless of the scale it's based on, uses at least THREE TONES. Those tones are played with one finger per tone...i.e. it takes THREE FINGERS.

As for which "FINGERS" to use, I think I've already discussed that pretty thoroughly in the free lesson pages of this web site. As for whether or not "professional" or "amateur" musicians play the way I describe...THEY DO...they just don't realize it until it's pointed out by someone. They didn't learn to "think" that way, but the end result of their "advanced" ability utilizes the EXACT SAME FINGERS I tell you about. And by the way...you HAVE met someone who plays the way I describe....ME! :) If you're researching it, don't ask...just observe. You'll see countless numbers of musicians playing basic chord tones with the fingering I teach. Here's why...the THUMB gets to play additional tones (one or more) to "color" the chord. It is NOT original with me...or anyone else! It's HOW it's done. I simply teach it in a logical progression by skipping the parts that will keep you stuck at beginner level (such as playing with the THUMB in a basic three tone chord).

Learn ALL chords with the basic handshape. After you can play the basic THREE tones of each chord, you can let your thumb FLOP on any key nearby and play it as an additional tone. The worst you can do is play an "advanced" chord. The question I would ask you is this...do you want to learn to play "correctly", or do you want to learn how to play in such a way that even your "accidents" sound good? The ultimate goal for me, and what I want for YOU, is to play with such freedom that "wrong" tones barely exist because they are heard as "advanced harmony". In that sense, I agree with you...the handshape I teach goes completely against everything I've ever read or heard about. It must be NEW, huh? Maybe so! If there's anything "magic" about PIANO MAGIC, it's the handshape I teach!

It's funny to me that people initially object (sometimes strongly) to what I tell them to do. Yet, in a matter of less than 30 minutes, they are true believers. You obviously haven't tried using it from the perspective of how it's presented in my book. I don't know where you are, but if you're local to a PIANO MAGIC WORKSHOP, try to attend. It would be a great visual demonstration for you. In time, I hope to have video clips on my web site, but that will be a while still. I'm in Marietta, GA. If you're near, give me a shout @ (678) 867-0705. I'll be glad to give you an "in person" demonstration, show you how to do it, and then let you do it for me.

Piano Magic students come at all levels of ability. If you're a beginner, start out simple. If you're advanced, use the same info as the beginner, but "decorate" with MORE chord tones throughout a song. Let your left thumb FLOP around some also, to create chord variations that sound great with no work. After you get used to the handshape, you'll even be able to play SIX TONE CHORDS with your left hand alone. It's all possible because of the handshape!

Take a listen to some of my recordings on MP3.com. If you don't like the sound of the chords, DON'T USE MY HANDSHAPE!

As for PAYPAL, it's a great company from my standpoint. It let's customers know they are dealing with a VERIFIED business. From the business side, it lets me know if the customer is VERIFIED as well. If you don't like PAYPAL, you still have the choice to contact ME DIRECT by toll free phone or fax. Or call me direct on your nickel. I accept VISA and MASTERCARD, as well as CHECK, MONEYORDER and CASH! Surely you can find ONE method that agrees with you? If not, I reckon we're in two different worlds. Sorry, that's the best I can do, I think.

I hope this explains what you're questioning. If not, write back! Thanks,

Michael Anderson

Comments about the web site: I play some basic church music by ear, but I need to develop my fingering in my right hand. right now I play the cord in my left hand and with one finger pick out the tune. I own a 61 key Panasonic KZ450 with a MIDI capibility. I really enjoy playing a keyboard and have a great desire to play well, because I have some very specific goals in mind.
My experience is: I play some basic cords and just pick out the tune, but I operate a 24-4 Mackie sound board at church

Comments about the web site: I've always been able to play by ear, and recently decided to get a keyboard and learn to play 'properly', so I could perfrom in bands or record. Until now I thought this meant I'd have to learn to ..(gasp) "read music"! Ugh! Thanks so much Michael - it's so *encouraging* to find that the sensibility I've always had with playing the piano with my heart/intuition and not with 'learning scales by rote' will not prove detrimental to any success I find with my musical pursuits. The main thing I currently lack confidence is the use of my hands, which I know is currently far from optimum. Even the picture on this site of the 'thumbless chord' is a massive insight for me! I can't wait to be able to get hold your book, and since I live in Brisbane Australia (hey, I love the 'Waltzing Matilda' recording!!), I won't be getting any workshops done. When I get the money together to get my keyboard (I'm waiting so I can get a proper, 88-key weighted one), I'll be back to get your book quick smart!! Thanks again for your warm and inspiring words! -JG.
My experience is: I have sort of 'music in the genes', but basically no one in my family can either read music nor made anything of their natural abilities. I am a devout DEVOUT D E V O U T fan of Fleetwood Mac . Christine McVie ('Don't Stop', 'Songbird' etc) is my inspirtaion to be able to play the piano 'fluently', or 'professionally'. And the Fleetwood Mac song 'Sara' is the pinnacle of music for me, and something I think I'll take to the grave! I've never actually had a piano - I went to my dad's on school holidays in primary school and he had one. To fill in the lonely days I'd "tell stories" on the piano, andeven though I only get to play the dman thing RARELY, I can play basically any radio song I want nowadays. It's as though even though I hardly ever get to use it, the skill doesn't die but just refines and matures in my time away from the piano! Anyway, I have a love affair with pianos, and when I get my great jeyboard (within the next year I can only hope - I'm only holding out becuase I want to get a virtual SUBSTITUTE for a real piano, not a plastic piece of junk) then I'll be practicing and really working on my inherent talent, which before I came across your site I had thought was a dead-end half-skill!! Thanks so much, and can't wait to get into the book, even if it for the most part compounds what I've already figured out. Could you tell me to what extent it deals with the correct usage of hands and the development of "strength and dexterity"? And is this truly sufficent for my professional aspirations..or should I put in the difficult yards to learn to read music? What I mean is, is playing by ear only good enough for entertaing myself (which is why i do it) and family, or is it sufficient for somethign really pro like playing in a band or performing? Thanks so SO much Michael. -JG.

I do play by ear but I get so fustrated because I don't know what I'm doing. My experience is: I play for the children's choir at my church, but they only sing the songs I know which are the songs I write. They are good but simple. I really want to learn how to play songs off of CDs, like the songs written by great gospel artists. I love writing my songs and poetry.

Comments about the web site:
Hi Derek,

First of all, the email address you left above is either incorrect or not accepting mail. Sorry you haven't received your book. You placed the order August 12, but ordered as if you were a resident of the USA. This made your shipping charges fall $2.55 short of the amount required for international mail order. As a result, your order was kicked out of the file for automatic fulfillment until the problem could be identified.

In spite of insufficient funds, the difference was forgiven (by me), the order was fulfilled and your book was shipped by '1st Class International Mail' on August 25th. It often takes 4 to 6 weeks for international orders to reach their destination. With this in mind, it is too early for your book to have arrived (unbelievable as it may seem). Waiting for the post office to do its job is certainly no fun, but is required for the physical shipment of information products...especially across international borders.

So let me ask...why did you order a physical book when you could have instantly accessed 5+ times more info through PMMO? Instead of waiting, you could have been making major progress through both Basic and Advanced PMMO (book is only Basic info). Your book will arrive...just give it enough time.

Thanks for writing,

Michael Anderson

P.S. In the future, please write me direct regarding your order...not in the guestbook.

Comments about the web site: I am scheduled to attend your workshop at JSU on September 13th. I understand there has to be a minimum of 10 so I'm contacting everyone I know who is interested in piano. I can hardly wait! I've tried to play for years but just haven't been able to "get it". Hope we get enough people to sign up.
My experience is: I have loved music all my life. I was in girls chorus in high school, church choir for the last 21 years and my mother and I minister and sing at the nursing home in Piedmont, Al. I have purchased other piano books over the years but got discouraged when I couldn't play. I could play a little but it just didn't suit me. I've created some music in C chord but could only get so far because I don't understand the left/right hand coordination.
