GENERAL PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Instructions below pics

Stocks
Rootstocks in June. These two year old Rootstocks will be grafted with specific varieties in July and August. It takes four years to produce one of my one year trees.

Colt close up
Close up of Colt Rootstocks. All stock is carefully graded. Minimal chemical weed control is used. I have developed various unique mechanical methods to assist this aim.

Graft
Tree Budding and Grafting. Good grafting is the key to producing the best trees. My technique acquired over 27 years and in four countries.

Lifting
Lifting of trees. Trees are undercut using a specially shaped blade. This eliminates damage from spades and allows me to lift all of the root system

When your trees arrive, put them in a shady place out of sunlight and frost. If unable to plant for several days, unwrap them, water the roots thoroughly and dig the bundles in to one or two large holes. They will be safe here throughout the Winter. Keep an eye open for mouse or vole holes around the trees and examine the roots if in doubt.

To Plant
Dig a generous sized hole and fork over the hard soil underneath thoroughly to help prevent waterlogging. Most trees are easy to establish but dislike waterlogged soils. Site a tree stake as necessary. If rabbits and hares are prevalent you must use spiral tree guards to prevent damage.

Add a handful of general fertilizer and a shovel of planting compost and mix these with the excavated soil. Replace the excavated soil mixture and take special care to see that the 'grafting point' (union), or 'kink' is above ground level with two or three inches to spare. If the union is buried the special rootstock will lose its control over both cropping and vigour of the tree. This is particularly important with Fruit Trees.

Water your new tree thoroughly (one bucket of water) and repeat weekly during the first growing season if you're able to. If any 'suckers' appear remove them from below the grafting point.

Pruning
There are many books available. The most popular is 'The Fruit Expert'

Take time to enjoy planting. Your tree will repay your care in flower, fruit and shade !
