Keeping an open mind During the four years I posted my description of the beliefs of the International Flat Earth Research Society (a.k.a., "the Flat Earth Society"), I received a lot of e-mail. Much of it was from people who were curious or felt spurned to friendly debate. As a third party, I can't speak for the Society, although I'm happy to clarify my understanding of their views. But even more mail came from people who felt compelled to write in and mock the Society, thinking I was somehow affiliated with them or otherwise qualified to bear the insults. I was surprised that there were so many people out there that used e-mail this way. These sorts of messages reveal quite a bit about the way people react to different perspectives. Iconoclasm is a threatening thing to some--even when it comes from a group as roundly dismissed by the world as the Flat Earth Society. The purpose of this site is not to promote the Society. Nor is it to mock them. Most people don't even know that a group like the Flat Earth Society exists. And of those who do, most dismiss it as a joke. One of my hopes is that I can change that perception. Herein you will find various pages exploring alternative perspectives. The pages aren't endorsed by any formal groups and don't claim any official relation to the groups described within. I run this site to promote thinking and dialogue about our fundamental assumptions about society and the world around us. It's easy to accept what we're told, but if you're a proponent of free thought, you must question your assumptions. |
