General Care of Panther Geckos

General Care of Panther Geckos

Panther Geckos should be maintained in vivariums that simulate their natural habitats. Play sand, play sand and potting soil, paper towels or carpeting have all been used as substrates. Bark, rocks or plastic containers can be used as hiding spots. Although the vivarium should be kept dry, a moist retreat is needed. A shallow water bowl or twice daily misting is required.

The geckos are insect feeders and require daily feeding. Crickets, mealworms, waxworms and field collected insects can be used for food. Commercial calcium with vitamin D3 and multi-vitamin supplements should be dusted on the insects and egg laying females must be provided with extra calcium. Panther Geckos eat a lot and grow fast. The geckos store fat in their tails and the best indicator of a well fed gecko is a fat tail.

Panther Geckos are tame and can be handled with care. Do not grasp the tail, it will break off as a defense mechanism. A new tail will regenerate, but it will be quite different in appearance from the original. Properly cared for the Panther Gecko makes an excellent pet and they will live for many years.
