Pocket Guide to Pediatric Drugs - Antacids
4.1 - ANTACIDS (OTC)
(Amphojel, Maalox, Mylanta, Riopan)

INDICATIONS:

  • The treatment of upset stomach, heartburn and acid indigestion.

DOSE:

  • For children over 1 year: 1 - 3 tsp every 3 - 6 hours or 1 and 3 hours after meals and at bedtime.

SUPPLIED:

  • Amphojel: Aluminum hydroxide 320 mg/5 ml suspension, 360 ml
  • Maalox: Aluminum hydroxide 225 mg/5 ml & magnesium hydroxide 200 mg/5 ml, 360 ml
  • Mylanta: Aluminum & magnesium hydroxide 200 mg/5 ml each with 20 mg simethicone, 360 ml
  • Riopan: Magaldrate 540 mg/5 ml suspension, 360 ml

COST:

  • Relatively inexpensive medications.
  • Generically available.

CAUTIONS:

  • May affect the absorption or action of other medications, give at least 1 hour after any other medication.
  • Aluminum containing antacids can cause constipation.
  • Magnesium containing antacids can cause diarrhea.
  • Not recommended in children under 1 year.

COMMENTS:

  • Shake well before using.
  • Not for long term use.
