Pocket Guide to Pediatric Drugs - Cephalosporins, Oral
5.134 - CEPHALOSPORINS, ORAL (Rx)
(Cephalexin - Keflex, Cephradine - Anspor, Velosef)

INDICATIONS:

  • Respiratory tract infections and skin and soft tissue infections caused by susceptible strains of staphylococci, streptococci, or pneumococci.
  • Otits media due to susceptible strains.

DOSE:

  • 25 - 50 mg/kg/day (11 - 46 mg/lb/day) in divided doses every 6 hours. 75 - 100 mg/kg/day (33 - 46 mg/lb/day) in divided doses every 6 hours for otitis media. Do not exceed 4 gm/day.
  • For streptococcal pharyngitis and skin and soft tissue infections, may give every 12 hours.
  • The usual course of therapy is 10 days.

SUPPLIED:

  • SUSPENSION: 125 mg/5 ml, 250 mg/5 ml - 100 ml & 200 ml, flavored.
  • CAPSULES: 250 mg, 500 mg.

COST:

  • Moderately priced antibiotic.
  • Capsules < Suspension
  • Generically available.

CAUTIONS:

  • Use with caution in the penicillin-allergic patient.
  • Contraindicated in the cephalosporin-allergic patient.
  • May cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or rash.

COMMENTS:

  • May be taken on a full or empty stomach.
  • The suspension is stable for 14 days after mixing.
  • Refrigeration is required.
