Pocket Guide to Pediatric Drugs - Amebicides
5.5 - AMEBICIDES (Rx)
(Metronidazole - Flagyl)

INDICATIONS:

  • Treatment of amebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis and anaerobic infections.

DOSE:

  • Dosage varies depending on the type of infection. Maximum dose is 4 gm per day.
  • Amebiasis: Usual dosage is 35 - 50 mg/kg/day (16 -23 mg/lb/day) every 8 hours for 10 days up to the adult dose of 750 mg q8h.
  • Giardiasis: Usual dosage is 15 mg/kg/day (6.8 mg/lb/day) every 8 hours for 7 days up to the adult dose of 250 mg q8h.
  • Trichomoniasis: Usual dosage is 15 - 30 mg/kg/day (6.8-13.6 mg/lb/day) in divided doses every 8 hours for 7 days up to the adult dose of 250 mg every 8 hours or 2 gm as a single dose (older children weighing more than 50 kg or 110 lbs).
  • Anaerobic Infections: Usual dosage is 15 - 35 mg/kg/day (6.8 -23 mg/lb/day) every 8 hours up to the adult dose of 500 mg every 6 - 8 hours.

SUPPLIED:

  • TABLETS: 250 mg, 500 mg.

COST:

  • Relatively inexpensive, generically available medication.

CAUTIONS:

  • Do not take anything containing alcohol for at least 24 hours after the last dose. May cause an antabuse-like reaction.
  • May cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and an unpleasant metallic taste.
  • May cause seizures, dizziness or confusion.

COMMENTS:

  • Take with food. Tablets can be crushed and mixed with food.
  • A suspension can be compounded if necessary but has a poor taste.
  • May discolor the urine a dark brown.
  • Pill splitters are available to cut tablets.
